Money -- you'd think after talking to the Pig that it means nothing to him, that he can take it or leave it. But, in fact, the Pig finds it really essential to have money and will spend a thousand dollars in a day if he/she finds what they enjoy. Then at other times he will frugally save every penny in his piggy bank. Happily, Pigs are very lucky with money and it always comes to them somehow. They end their days being well-off and contented.
Pig people love domestic comfort and are also in love with nature -- their idea of heaven is to take long walks in the forest; their ideal house is in the country, the mountains or at the seaside where they can do regular walks on the beach. A very large number of Pigs usually live in the country and if they don't, they yearn for it every day. Pigs need space and lots of fresh air. Modern flats and apartments will depress them and they will feel sick in a confined space. Lifts and elevators are too much for them for very long. Their home is a pride and joy and they can be found tinkering, renovating, adding to the rooms and frequently decorating to make it all comfortable, filling the place with expensive and lush objects of beauty. They will not allow dust and dirt to besmudge their property but will remove it in a whirl of cleanliness.
The mythological stories of the Pig are fascinating, as the Pig is always associated with knowing the next world. Pigs were wild in old China and Vietnam and they were powerful solitary animals that fed on acorns and corn and often devastated the harvests of farmers. In Celtic mythology the Pig was a supernatural animal and a herd of swine was regarded with the utmost respect. The Celts regarded the pig as an assistant in understanding the spiritual nature of man. In many other mythologies too the Pig is regarded as an animal of spiritual authority. The Pig even has a shaman-like quality to him as there are old stories of him changing into human form. In Chinese Zodiac culture the Pig symbolises courage, nobility and prosperity. In Japan he sometimes represents the god of war. In Vietnam the Pig was an animal from the next world, a noble animal and also able to be the master of the palace.
In our western culture, however, we have huge problems with the Pig and often find him revolting or regard him with gastronomical delight and serve him up on platter, knowing little about his symbolism in older cultures. The other image we have is of the pig wallowing in mud -- we imagine him as a lewd or indulgent and repulsive beast. Nothing could be further from the truth about Pig. He is a strong and significant animal of spiritual guidance.
What has the origins of the Piggy Bank got to tell us about the Pig year? The Piggy Bank -- 'Pygg' is an orange coloured clay commonly used during the Middle Ages as a cheap material for pots to store money, called pygg pots or pygg jars. There are discussions among linguists as to whether "pygg" was simply a dialectal variant of "pig." By the 18th century, the term "pig jar" had evolved to "pig bank". As earthenware was supplanted by other materials, such as glass, plaster and plastic, the name gradually began to refer specifically to the shape of the bank, instead of what was used to make it. So the Piggy Bank, which is definitely associated with saving for wealth, was born.
Pig people are honest, rigorous and tolerant. They are persevering and steady and not necessarily competitive. They like money, are good at spending it and are also able to be prosperous anyway. They love beauty, liberty, fresh air and greenery. They like to walk along beaches, or in forests and listen to the sounds of nature while observing the birds and animals.
Pigs come into the world with a hat full of good old fashioned sentiments, such as goodness and altruism, helping others is so important. They try to put themselves in the place of others and understand where they come from. They believe there always exists a flame of goodness and heartfulness which burns brightly and must be protected at all costs. They avoid making snap judgements and tend to abhor disputes and conflict. They always and often choose to compromise, but this can lead to some people thinking it makes them look weak. Not so! They don't care too much what others think, as they believe in a better world where all are treated well, and they refuse to listen to the pessimists.
The Pig born are sociable types and like to be with people. But they don't always speak out, rather preferring to remain more silent as they often fear putting their foot in it. One to one they are great talkers and speak happily about all and sundry. They make great friends and never let you down, but they do tend to become disheartened when they face nastiness and hypocrisy.
In childhood Pig people are sometimes slow, stubborn, hypersensitive and secretive. They are not demanding or critical, and are usually well behaved. They need tranquility and comfort, so if you have Pig children take care of them as they need support, consistency and plenty of fresh air. Do not lock them in your homes and be sure to allow them out to play.
Pigs love life and even know how to make flowers grow in the desert. They have great imaginations for beauty and therefore make joyful poets and words people. They are fascinated by love and even from their early days are motivated and conditioned around the pleasures of loving others. They can be quite sensual, passionate and imaginative. They like to experiment in love and if you are with a Pig partner expect to be adaptable in your love life.
Pigs are also very faithful by nature and quite demanding and discriminating. Once they have found the person they love, they are with him or her forever. Pigs expect their partners to be honest and fully express their feelings like the Pig does. When happy with a relationship they are very reliable, peaceful and dependent.
This is a Yin Earth year with an earthly branch of Water and the heavenly stem of Earth on top. According to the Chinese Five Element cycle of birth and destruction governing the interrelationship between these elements, if two elements are in a destructive cycle and have a conflicting relationship, then the year will have more difficulties. But the nature of Yin Earth is of a garden rich in nutrients or Mother Earth energy which is more gentle. Hence the atmosphere that people may choose is to be more considerate and less stubborn with a need to compromise and accommodate other's needs. With this atmosphere there can be improvements in harmony and peace in international relationships. However, with Yin Earth sitting on Yin Water the peace and harmony can be superficial without sufficient foundations. Therefore that peaceful atmosphere can be somewhat fragile and there may be undercurrents of secretive hostility in the world of politics.
Yin Earth is related to 'garden earth' and to 'Mother Earth' which brings an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort. You'll note many people born on Yin Earth days are artists, reformers and scientists with contributions to culture, humanity and nature. Yin Earth sitting on the Water element is lacking support, so it is weak and unstable Earth and this is likely to bring earth disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, collapsing of buildings and avalanches. We've been seeing many sinkholes appear across the entire planet in open nature areas, but also in cities and urban areas. There will be more dangers of this sunken ground phenomena in 2019 and the possibility of buildings collapsing due to unstable foundations. The powerful Water of the Pig year also will bring more water disasters like serious flooding and heavy rainstorms.
Looking back over history, there were quite serious earth disasters related to the Earth Pig years.
In Traditional Chinese medicine, Yin Earth represents stomach and pancreas. The imbalance in Earth element is very related to stomach and digestion problems. As Yin Earth rules the pancreas, responsible for regulation of blood sugar through production of insulin, the resulting weakness of the pancreas also causes diabetes. The diminishing of Fire element from 2019 will also bring weakness in blood circulation and with the heart. The heart and blood circulation aspect is difficult and since the Pig triggers termination of Fire, its not favourable for people with weak Fire, i.e., weak heart and blood. It brings problems with poor energy, a weakened heart and poor circulation. People need to take care of their hearts and blood circulation -- plenty of good exercise helps, and avoid sitting for long periods of time. Avoid excessive salt and fat based diets. Use more salads and fruits.
The Yin Earth element is expected to bring prosperity to Wood industries and Earth industries. The Wood industry includes media, books, education and environmental industries. Earth industries are property, mining and insurance. In the Five Element system, Fire is happiness and optimism which prevailed in the previous years of Fire Monkey and Fire Rooster. However when the year of Dog arrived, Fire entered the "grave" bringing setbacks in optimism, which in turn will cause setbacks in the economic atmosphere.
The optimistic Fire element continues to diminish in the Year of the Pig. The Pig is the stage when Fire is "terminated" and the worry-led fear-based Water element is beginning to take over. Water symbolises fear, so there is a lack of optimism this year and it will bring declines in economic growth and a longer term setback with the stock market. The years 2019, 2020, 2021 are all years of Water and Metal elements so the Fire element will not return until the next Snake year in 2025. Therefore the general economic atmosphere is entering a low cycle and the economic pace will start to slow down in 2019. There will be no return until 2025, when we expect a better market situation. The Metal industries such as banking, machinery, cars, etc., are into an unfavourable year, as the Wood element is missing so not as much money is about.
