Aries the Ram
creative urges awaken
Welcome to 2016, dear Aries! Amazing changes have been under way for you during the past few years with rebellious Uranus in your sign igniting a need for originality, an independent streak, and being the humanitarian in the way people perceive you. Relationships have also undergone massive disruptions, but with it new ways of expressing your individuality and need for freedom. This process will continue all year as Uranus awakens creative urges in your personality.
The New Moon in capable Capricorn on January 10th heads the year by highlighting your career, ambitions and life-path. Dark Pluto in the shadows in Capricorn has been slowly reshaping your world as you know it now. This lunation will influence your relationships with superiors, generate conflict with authority, and bring difficult but not insurmountable circumstances in overcoming those with more power than your own over a lengthy period.
Mars Retrograde
Warrior Mars, your planetary rules, turns retrograde on April 17th. This relatively rare condition only happens once every two years and two months, but the effects of the phase differs according to the sign in which it falls. A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac.
What does this mean for the Ram? The Warrior turns retrograde in fiery Sagittarius, your 9th house of the higher mind, backtracking through The Archer's territory to re-enter intense Scorpio on May 27th, your 8th house of sex, death and taxes. Mars then returns to direct motion on June 29th before re-entering Sagittarius on August 2nd. You will be well and truly ready to steam ahead after August 22nd. Quite a lengthy phase!
The first part of the Mars retrograde phase is in your 9th house. Between April 17th and May 26th and then again from August 1st to the 22nd, be extremely careful when travelling and make sure that the details of your itinerary are precise. Avoid places that you are not familiar with and don't get into heated arguments around May 21st to the 23rd. Your ideals and beliefs are likely to be challenged by others.
Your drive and motivation may be put to the test as frustration sets in, especially if you're sports orientated. This may be the time for you to finish off your higher education, or scientific degree. For other Rams, circumstances may affect your adventurous spirit through injury, disruptions and unscheduled delays. Legal matters may be held over, or you may experience problems with publishers, religious groups, foreign war zones, cultural differences, and intangible situations where you could be harmed. Likewise there could be strife in your local area, with neighbours, the media, communication and transport.
The second part of the Mars retrograde phase is in your 8th house from May 27th up to August 2nd. The Warrior redirects his attention back into Scorpio, so money concerns will take priority. Joint finances and joint possessions, mortgage, loans, investments, estates, and managing outstanding debts, taxes, and business ventures will need your eagle eye. Check beneath the surface for flaws and develop a plan of action if warranted. The time to avoid risky speculations with money, or get into debates haggling over a terms and conditions is June 9th and the 10th. You'll be tempted by spending impulsively and stretching your credit limit, but, be warned, this will only get you into extended debt.
Be discerning with the company you keep, especially if it involves a secret liaison, as this may bring more troubles than expected. Your passion will be greater, revisiting areas of deeper psychological fears and desires. Take another look at your intimate relationships and the role you play in them. Life and death will have a greater meaning, as you explore interests in metaphysics, esoteric matters, the occult or magic.
From August 21st to 28th, watch for deception among people you deal with, which will produce hidden worries. You may be involved with hospitals or institutions, and take an interest in the welfare of others. There will of course be delightful moments meeting interesting people and going to places of beauty.
Lord of Karma
The Lord of Karma, Saturn, is slowly making his way through your 9th house, bringing certain restrictions and stabilising your broader perception. You'll appreciate other people's culture and living standards, especially if you are travelling abroad. This is a good time to be involved in politics and the law, or in teaching, publishing, preaching, studying theology, and religious beliefs. From August 21st to the 28th, the Warrior and strict Saturn join forces to proscribe your natural energetic pursuits. This could produce a test of endurance, meeting resistance from others, fighting, frustration and ill-health.
 Relationships: the Journey to the Heart 
The Goddess Venus dances into your sign on April 5th, staying there till the 29th. You will not only be feeling great about yourself, but your relationships will appreciate your charm, ardent affection and flirty qualities. Sensual Venus moves into Libra, your 7th house of significant commitments from August 30th to September 22nd, with the glorious Sun also moving into Libra at the equinox, staying in the sign of the Scales from September 22nd to October 21st. This will be a wonderful time to rejuvenate existing love relationships, have exciting times, and add sparkle to newly formed partnerships.
On September 9th, benevolent Jupiter will start a major 12 year cycle in Libra, your 7th house. This new cycle will bring opportunities, broader knowledge, gifts and new experiences in current relationships, business partnerships, joint ventures, and acknowledgement in public relations. The outlook is prosperous for new unions, and getting engaged or married. This also extends to getting advice from consultants, litigation, contract negotiations and receiving cooperation from others. No one can resist you once Venus moves into Aries and your 1st house of personality on March 22nd, just in time to wish you a very happy birthday. Your birthday month may prove to be the jolliest of the year... enjoy the good vibes and well wishes. The last few days of the month could bring a happy surprise as Venus and Uranus combine to bring you good fortune. If you are single, love at first sight is not out of the question. Money and how to spend it comes into focus after April 15th, when luxury loving Venus lights up your 2nd house of money and possessions. Unfortunately, with Saturn in your 8th house of taxes, you may find that you owe more this year than you expected. Tighten your belt as necessary. You'll be able to sweet talk your way into or out of anything after May 9th, when Venus moves into chatty Gemini and your 3rd house of communication. Home and family becomes your refuge once Venus moves into clannish Cancer and your 4th house on June 6th. Venus blends well with karmic Saturn and spiritual Neptune, making this a very good time to make peace with your family. Even if you just forgive and move on, you'll reap the benefits of a heart set free. Looking up your ancestry may benefit you now... who knows what your family history might be! By June 27th, joy and pleasure return to your life as Venus occupies your 5th house of creativity and romance. You may want what you can't have, or you may be the object of someone else's unreturned desire during the first few days of July, when Venus and Saturn clash. Otherwise, you can expect to enjoy exuberant days and passionate nights as Venus reminds you of what brings a smile to your face. After July 22nd, Venus brightens your 6th house of health and service, acting like a much needed vitamin shake and beauty treatment after a period of overindulgence. During the course of the year, outside interests demand more of your time as you forge ahead with new endeavours. Your work, health, and career issues will consume your time, so scheduling routine into your home life is a must. Pluto will undermine your domestic scene, replacing it with an alternative to what you have been accustomed to. This means your security, comforts, sentimental possessions, real estate and property issues will also undergo a transformation. Family members may move out of home, or you may decide it's necessary to live a different lifestyle, which will leave you feeling insecure initially. Conditions will be more favourable from June 17th to July 11th. Demands will be placed from June 30th to July 3rd as balancing your career and family life will be difficult.
Work and Health
Expansive Jupiter is currently progressing through your 6th house of work, health and routine. This is bringing good fortune, and the acknowledgement of your service to others. There are favourable work rewards, an increase in salary, with an increased ability to organise and administer. You may need to employ others to help you with your endeavours. However, there's a chance of overestimating your position of importance in the workplace. Your physical output and endurance should increase, but may also bring about an excess in weight by overindulging. There'll be quite an array of opportunities from August to early September, improving your prospects, conditions, rewards and success.
Career and Finances
Your ego drive could be overwhelming at the start, seeing you making a serious play for a position of leadership and recognition. Communicating your ideas and desire to achieve is likely to be held over as Mercury in Aquarius goes retrograde on January 5th, shifting back into Capricorn on the 8th. On the 3rd, Mars, your ruler, begins energising your 8th house of finances, joint accounts, possessions, estates, taxes and investments. Intimate relationships will get a boost from your sexuality, while research into life after death, the occult and spirituality will be intriguing.
You will hit out with a burst of ovine enthusiasm from February 1st to the 6th, enabling you to impress employers and those at the top. You can earn rewards from splendid opportunities with work from February 12th to 16th. If you can get over the hurdle of the first few days, the first half of February will be delightful for spontaneous romantic adventures, recognition and success.
Pluto has been shaking your structures and giving you a different outlook, generating change in objectives, and life-path plans. Your personal and public self-image will also undergo massive alterations as rebellious Uranus stirs up feelings to provoke certain actions by you.
June 19th to July 7th could produce the break that you have been looking for, with recognition for your hard efforts and changing fortunes. Be careful of power struggles from October 18th to the 21st. Self-undoing, provoked anger, problems with authority figures, your employer or within your profession are in the frame. Your reputation may suffer, so avoid physical confrontations. The alternative is utilising your tremendous energy to be creative, show leadership and take control on a large scale. Likewise, hold back on that argumentative side from October 28th to the 31st.
Mercury, the Cosmic Messenger, enters a retrograde phase for a brief period of some three weeks three times a year on average. This year, however, there are four retro phases for you to deal with. During these phases hiccups are likely to occur in communication, travel and transport. Misunderstandings, lack of information, phone and internet problems, along with breakdowns with appliances, machinery and component failure are all in the frame. This occurs thanks to inattention to detail, messages being unclear, or misreading the fine-print in documents. Fine-tune areas that need your attention; other people may be holding back on information that you are after, or has it simply been misplaced, even lost in the mail?
Ideas and plans that are put in place at the onset of a retrograde period are subject to delays, or being put on the backburner for another time. While Mercury is retrograde, a process of review can effectively resolve problems, more so when Mercury returns to direct motion through the zodiac. Not everyone suffers so much during a retrograde phase, due to Mercury's condition in the natal chart. For instance, should the Divine Messenger be retrograde at the time of birth, it can give you the flow of tidying up loose ends, clearing paperwork, and looking at areas that need your attention. Those with natal Mercury retrograde often do very well during these transiting retrograde periods. If that's you, remember that others may not be so fortunate!
It's important to double-check all arrangements for possible mistakes. Listen to what others have to say and make yourself clearly understood. If possible, hold off on major decisions and purchases, signing crucial documents, and making new verbal or written agreements. This year's Mercury retrograde phases are outlined below, giving you an insight into the year ahead:
January 5th - 25th, Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius, 11th house
Mercury, the Cosmic Messenger starts the year in retrograde motion, touching on your 11th house of friends, hopes and wishes before stepping back to Capricorn, your 10th house of career and ambitions. This often sees a period of breakdowns, cross communication, loop holes, loss of information and untimely delays. If you have applied for new employment, be prepared for late responses, even being at loggerheads with employers and authority figures from the 21st to the end of the month. Mercury goes direct again on January 25th but continue to review your situation, with clearer answers coming after February 15th.
April 28th - May 22nd, Mercury Retrograde in Taurus, 2nd house
On April 28th, Mercury turns retrograde in your 2nd house of personal earnings, values and possessions. This is the time to hold off on any large purchases, financial commitments, loans, investments and business ventures. There are likely to be hold ups with financial institutions and with changes to your money stream through work or career developments If substantial agreements have been made prior to this date, then recheck all ongoing documentation and approvals. Be patient. There may be paperwork that needs approval, or payments delayed during this time. Research, and spend time going over figures, data and spreadsheets. Mercury turns direct on May 22nd, but will be back to speed after June 8th.
August 30th - September 22nd, Mercury Retrograde in Virgo, 6th house
On August 30th, the Cosmic Prankster turns retrograde in your 6th house of work, health and routines. You'll be particularly critical thanks to an increase in workload, combined with a busier schedule at work and on the home front. Those who work for or with you are subject to carelessness and confusion. Accomplish what you can, keeping your mind focussed on details without juggling too many balls at the same time. Misunderstandings could occur with workmates, employees, and working relationships with others. Make sure your agenda is clear. Keep your diary up to date, and ensure that the details of messages and information you receive are accurate. A medical condition could flare up, warranting extra trips to the doctor; nervous tension and mental fatigue could plague you. Mercury turns direct on September 22nd, but gets back to business after October 7th when you will be in a position to sell yourself and improve your working routines.
December 19th - January 8th, 2017, Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn, 10th house
This marks the last Mercury retrograde phase for 2016, starting on December 19th in your 10th house of career and ambitions. During this phase (stretching into the New Year), your mental activity will be focussed on achievements at year end and plans for 2017. It will be a time spent connecting with versatile people, and those at the top of the ladder in your profession. Rethink your tactics, as plans and projects are likely to be held over. On December 28th and 29th, work behind the scenes with charities, counselling, and helping those in hospitals and institutions. Mercury briefly re-enters Sagittarius on January 4th, before going direct on January 8th, then back into Capricorn on January 12th. If you have planned a lengthy holiday, be prepared to expect some sort of travel delay or missed connections with people from overseas. From January 28th, start re-establishing your plans and outlining your aims.

The Lord of the Underworld, Pluto, will shake your career sector, bringing changes to life-path plans and aims, and potential conflict with powerful figures.
Your Full Moon shines on October 16th, representing the climax of events that began back in April. This will be a potent Full Moon, as rebellious Uranus remains on the scene.
