Red Monkey, by Rob Elliott

Virgo New Moon:
August New Moon 2006
Month of the Fire Monkey

The New Moon in Virgo happens in 2006 on August 23, at 19:11 hours GMT (August 24, 3:11 AM in Beijing). Malvin Artley, our regular esoteric commentator, has always taken a deep interest in Chinese Astrology. So deep in fact that he has even created a Chinese Astrology Computer Program, now published by the makers of Solar Fire. Malvin has now decided to give us each month an analysis of the energies expressed by the New Moon, but in a new twist: from the viewpoint of Chinese Astrology!

Greetings, my Friends!

There are times when we must adapt our lives to outer events. Mists hung heavy in the trees covering the towering slopes of the mountain range. The tropical air was thick with the smell of the rotting debris of the forest floor below and the perfume of the flowering trees above. Life was full of adventure for the red monkey and all that play and exploration among the trees in the undergrowth with his clan had made him hungry. He gathered a collection of nuts from the forest floor and emerged from the trees and perched himself upon a rocky outcrop which overlooked a stunning vista below.

The sea of verdure below him, punctuated by the occasional rocks of the mountains, gave him a strange sort of calm as he sat and cracked the shells of the few nuts against a rock. As he sat there munching away at the flesh of the nuts the air was pierced by the cry of a soaring eagle overhead. He stopped and looked up, careful not to become lunch himself in his exposed predicament. Still, the trees were only a few hops away and he felt pretty safe amongst the jagged rocks.

Monkey Mischief!

“What adventure shall I have next?” he thought (if monkeys do that). What mischief shall I engage in, and how shall I get my come-uppance on the surly dominant male of the group? So much to do, and so little time to waste. All that play is hard work. The supply of nuts almost gone, the red monkey sought inspiration for his next foray into the unknown depths of the undergrowth. Something stopped him in the midst of his musing, though. There, along with the perfume from the forest, was something different. Smoke! He looked to the valley below and saw a fire making its way up the slope. And that eagle was starting to look as though it had lunch on its mind, and that a little red monkey might be the main course! Adventure and play would have to wait. It was time to address more serious concerns.

More Serious Concerns...

Our first such foray, I will keep this very brief. The new moon of August 24, 2006 occurs at 3:11 AM Beijing Time (7:11 PM GMT on the 23rd). As we can see from the Four Pillars, this is the month of the Fire Monkey (Red Monkey), which is known poetically as the Mountain Monkey. The main theme of the month, as we can surmise from the little introductory story, is that it is time to address more serious concerns. Play is good, but only in its proper context. Also, acclaim for work only comes after renewed effort.

Virgo 06 Pillars
“Retreating into obscurity, the Wise One is never diminished.”

Fire is the most spiritual of the Five Chinese Elements. It inclines toward inspirational thought, mental agility, professional work, and stimulating conversation. The month is also a Yang month, meaning it will be good for structuring and restructuring things. It should be a good month, then, for negotiations of all sorts, communications, correspondence, projects requiring more than a modicum of thought and for a fresh start on things that have been left languishing for some time.

All things inventive and intricate are favored in this month, and this is given further impetus from the Day Pillar, which is the Wood Rooster. Since the Day Pillar rules how the month is ‘carried out’ in terms of process, the onus is upon us to do things in right timing, to practice proper decorum and to give careful consideration to seizing the right moment. There is a great chance for renewal and fresh hopes if these guidelines are followed. In other words, it is time to buckle down and get serious about things once again. No more fooling around! We’ll see how the month plays out.

Cheers,
Malvin.
