Jupiter Enters Libra 2016
expanding cooperation in harmony
Every year, Jupiter, Lord of Fortune, moves from one sign to the next, setting the stage of human consciousness for the ensuing year. September 2016 sees him emerging from the restrained habitat of Virgo to the well-balanced environment of charming Libra. Libra, the cardinal air sign, seeks aesthetic pleasure, balance in relationships and a harmonious environment. Relationships, fashion and the arts, the law and justice are stimulated, especially at the political, financial, and cultural or religious levels (these are the areas mainly governed by Jupiter). Rob Tillett, the founder of AstroScope Me, discusses the effects this new transit will have on the various signs of the zodiac.

On September 9th, 2016, Jupiter, the noble lord of the ancient gods, moves from the mutable earth sign Virgo the Virgin, known for its discriminating and practical manner to the cardinal air sign Libra the Scales. This change of state for leader of the gods will particularly affect people and communities governed by cardinal signs. The cardinal signs are Aries (currently inhabited by disruptive Uranus), Cancer, Libra and Capricorn (currently being transformed by a very lengthy transit of Pluto).
Whenever Jupiter changes signs, a new flavour is brought to the underlying experience of our lives, giving a subliminal boost to the matters governed by the sign and house concerned. Jupiter in the heavens usually remains in each sign of the zodiac for approximately twelve months, taking twelve years to transit the entire zodiac. At the end of each of these cycles, related matters must progress to a new level, or else they will fall away into obscurity and eventual oblivion. 2016 sees a significant move for Jupiter, from a demand for perfection in earthy Virgo to a demand for justice in Libra.
Jupiter, the Great Healer
Jupiter brings varied shades of colour to the world when he shines in Libra. Here he awakens a kind, sympathetic and loving approach. Jupiter is the great healer and should open up the higher mind of humanity to mystical, even transcendental subjects, especially uttering a collective cry for justice and fair-dealing. On the more mundane side, Jupiter's expansive character will bring more confidence in relationships and partnerships, whether legal, business or personal, but we need to beware that this renewed hope and optimism does not encourage over-confidence and rash risk-taking.
Jupiter in Libra also seeks balance and justice, so under his influence over the ensuing 12 months our energies become more popular with the opposite sex and we gain benefit from partnership. Success in business and public life are characteristic of this transit. On occasions when Jupiter is afflicted, indulgence of the lower nature will bring troubles and public scandal for leaders affected, with a consequent loss of popularity and prestige. Working in partnership, joint ventures and other cooperative efforts is the key to success.
Isis, Serpent Goddess by IgnisSerpentus
The status and circumstances of current alliances and joint ventures are likely to be greatly enhanced. The outlook is also prosperous for new unions established under this influence. The success of the year ahead also extends to consultations, legal matters, contract negotiations and our efforts to gain assistance or cooperation for any reason. We need to control the tendency to take others, especially a partner, for granted; to exaggerate the prospects or status of a relationship or joint venture; and to overestimate the assistance or cooperation we may receive from others.
During periods when Jupiter is afflicted, the collective mind is not so well balanced, unleashing a tendency to throw money around like confetti! Although Libra is by-and-large a poised and steady influence, over-confidence or reckless risk-taking at times may cause loss in business (or indeed any) ventures and the mighty can fall from grace with a crash. Jupiter in Libra warns that the very areas in which we are likely to experience growth and expansion have a tendency to get out of control. How inclined or efficient we may be at keeping control, or regaining control when it has been lost, is determined by other factors in an individual's, a corporation's, or a community's natal chart.
The Cardinal Cross
On September 9th, Jupiter's aspects are significant. According to the American Ephemeris, mighty Jupiter crosses the border out of Virgo into Libra at 11:19 UT, which is later in the day for most of the world, but earlier for the Americas. When this action takes place, Jupiter forms a stressful opposition aspect to the Aries Point. The Aries Point, the first degree of Aries, is the beginning of the tropical zodiac, a very potent position. In 2010 this point was powerfully activated by a conjunction of Jupiter with disruptive Uranus and with Uranus still in Aries in 2016, the opposition reactivates the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the position, subjecting the world to fiery conflict, natural destruction and military action, especially once Mars enters Capricorn on September 27th. You can read more on this topic in my article on Jupiter in Aries, but it's a reactivation of the Cardinal Cross between Jupiter and Mars in Cancer, Uranus in Aries, Pluto in Capricorn.
Jupiter and Uranus are thus in opposition from the start, but this aspect becomes partile (exact) in the last two weeks of December 2016. Jupiter opposing Uranus provokes impulsive action by individuals and even world leaders; this is liable through sudden or unexpected turns to lead to their undoing. Loss by speculation, lawsuits and impulsive extravagance are also indicated, as well as changes of occupation and residence, loss of friends and reputation. Those affected will be deliberately confrontational, while remaining stubbornly entrenched in antagonistic modes. New endeavors attract massive energy and attention, only to be dropped like hot potatos. People's behaviour tends to be inconstant and unreliable under this aspect. Eccentric religious beliefs, mysticism, and occultism are stimulated.
Mars entering Capricorn on September 27th energizes the Aries Point and awakens the Grand Cross. This aspect mark a test between the forces of spiritual renewal and the egoic urge to self-aggrandizement. It is a life-challenging aspect that promises death through war, crime, or catastrophe. We must use this power constructively, because, aside from any external stresses, our actions will have far-reaching consequences for ourselves as well as others. Interaction with others can cause us to become deeply jealous and vengeful, perhaps with truly perilous results; and thus, it would not be wise for our leaders to confront or provoke hostile situations. The situation by the middle of October 2016 is tense and aggravated by the conjunction of Mars with dark Pluto and the square of Mars to disruptive Uranus at the end of October. This influence implies rash as well as unpredictable actions, so be sure to take care during this period. Keep in mind that not only are our actions unpredictable, but so are their consequences. Whatever we may hope to gain by them is not likely to be what turns out in the end.
Jupiter is a Time Lord
The cycles of Jupiter, in coordination with the cycles of Saturn, the other "Great Chronocrator", or "Time Lord", direct the energies that have significant effects on the collective being. These are especially marked by the conjunctions between these two massive forces, but also by the sign changes, hard aspects and retrograde periods.
Jupiter and Saturn are Time Lords
The cycles of astrology are reflected in our daily lives, as well as informing the patterns of our human creativity, whether artistic or musical, social, political or financial. The sextile aspect between Jupiter and Saturn always marks periods of general good fortune. Hard work, organisation and careful planning are favoured and should pay off.
Tradition, maturity and experience are the touchwords, with a clear vision of the future based on firm foundations what we can work towards.
During this phase we will see Jupiter in lucky sextile to Saturn in December 2016 and January 2017, with Jupiter slowing in Libra and Saturn moving steadily forward in Sagittarius. Jupiter receives Saturn in Libra (where the stern Lord is exalted) and Saturn receives Jupiter in Sagittarius, Jupiter's own sign and the sign of his joy. This is a mutual reception between the Time Lords, so the effects on the collective will be quite encouraging, as fortune and structure combine. It indicates a philanthropic disposition and true religious impulse. Those affected are trusted, honoured, respected and in demand for positions of value, in social, industrial or religious circles. Situations offer the opportunity to make use of experience as well as the hard work, organization and planning our past efforts have achieved. If we lack maturity, the willingness to work hard, or the experience that will allow us to take advantage of circumstances, what we are being given now is a chance to attain these very things.
Jupiter turns retrograde in the 24th degree of Libra on February 6th, 2017, conjunct the supremely fortunate star Spica. Known for stimulating wealth, fame, honour and glamour, Spica looks like one star, but is actually two, an eclipsing binary in a tight orbit of 4 days. Spica has always been universally regarded as one of the most positive stars in the sky. Jupiter while close to Spica is protected from the heat of the Via Combusta, an otherwise unfortunate sector of the zodiac.
In late Egyptian times, the constellation of Virgo was sometimes perceived as the goddess Isis, and Spica was the divine child Horus seated in her lap. Later, Virgo became identified with the Virgin Mary, and Spica with the Christ child. But it is most commonly seen as the sheaf of wheat which Persephone, the goddess of Virgo, holds in her hand. The Hellenistic astrologers saw Spica as a mixture of Mercury and Venus; hence its natives are said to be learned, philosophical, eloquent, creative, clever, artistic, pleasure-loving, practical, high-minded and successful, but sometimes fickle or promiscuous. Kenneth Johnson tells us that Anonymous of 379 wrote that Spica, in particular among the Mercury-Venus stars, produces men who act as "hierophants" or high priests as well as philosophers, and that it produces women who become priestesses of Isis, Demeter, or Persephone. Could this "hierophant" be Donald Trump? His daughter Ivanka certainly fits as his high priestess... On the other hand, perhaps Hillary will become the great goddess of the US political elite, as the first female president in history!
Jupiter remains retrograde until June 9th, 2017, when he turns in tight conjunction with the deadly fixed star, Algorab, whose character generates scavenging, destructiveness, repulsiveness, malevolence, fiendishness and lying, along with suicide, greed and injuries. Not so good now. Mars at this time enters his fall in Cancer, the sign of the Crab, producing people inclined to exercise authority over everything and everybody within the home (and homeland, as the USA is a Cancerian country), tolerating no other authority. This position makes the temper rather uncertain and there is a tendency for people affected to change occupations.
An afflicted Mars (opposing the Moon) indicates domestic troubles, frequent if not violent scenes and quarrels, child and spouse abuse, etc. It also indicates accidents by fire by carelessness. As Mercury hikes into Gemini (Trump's Sun sign) and Venus enters Taurus, Trump's mid-heaven, we see that his chart and the chart of the USA are highly stimulated. Mars in the US chart is in Gemini, Taurus is on the cusp of the 6th house of the military, and Jupiter is conjunct the Sun in Cancer.
Growth and Expansion
Jupiter rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. He rules our optimism and aspirations, including our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure – and moving into unknown territory.
Luck and wellbeing are primarily governed by Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic (Venus is the Lesser Benefic). When well-aspected, the Thunder God brings superb opportunities for expansion and success. Poorly aspected, he generates over-confidence and foolhardy actions with little care for the consequences.
Here is a brief outline of the effects on each sign as Jupiter enters Libra for a period of a little over twelve months. Remember to check the forecast for your rising sign too, for a more balanced reading. To estimate your rising sign, click here.
Aries, the Ram
September 9 brings Jupiter forward into the charming and cooperative sign of the Scales, your solar seventh house of marriage, partnership and open confrontation. Interaction with important people, especially your partner, spouse or other allies, is especially stimulating. It can bring broader knowledge and new experiences for you. Current partnerships and other alliances (as well as joint ventures) should expand and improve. Marriage is in the stars for many of you, or signing up for a serious, committed partnership. Consultations, legal matters and contract negotiations are favoured. Make sure you don't take others, especially a partner, for granted, as you may become just a bit too cocky under this influence. It would not be wise to exaggerate the prospects of a relationship or joint venture, nor to overestimate the help and input you may receive from others.
The retrograde phase during the forecast period begins this year in Libra on February 9 and lasts until March 6th, 2017. Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th, 2017, then you can look forward to a year of sex, death, taxes, and a focus on life's mysteries. I will look more closely at your prospects in another article here later in the year. For now, check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Taurus, the Bull
On September 9, Jupiter, the lord of the cosmic gods, strides into Libra, your solar sixth house. That's a good thing! Your work and working relationships are likely to expand, as it stimulates a much more favourable outlook for relationships with employees, subordinates and associated professionals. It's a good time to streamline your working routines. Relations with underlings can also be improved, though you'll be happiest when working unsupervised. Your work and responsibilities will expand in scope and you may need to take on extra help. Don't get the idea that you are invincible, dear Taurus, as pride often comes before a fall. Your job may require more travel, or advanced training—but it would be unwise to take any aspect of it for granted. You may buy a pet or other small animal during this transit, or take more of an interest in small animals. Military matters might occupy your mind, and your interest in health and physical fitness may increase. Your physical wellbeing has a favourable outlook, but don't take your health too much for granted. Avoid procrastination and overeating.
A retrograde phase occurs this year between February 9th and March 6th of 2017. Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th, 2017, then Scorpio, your solar seventh house, receives this benefic energy over the ensuing year. Partnerships, marriage and even legal issues will go well for you and eligible Bulls will be drawn to tie the knot. Let's hope it does not signify the irresistible force meeting the immoveable object! I will give you some more detailed info, so follow your star here later in the year, for an update to the forecast. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Gemini, the Twins
Fortunate Jupiter is a healing, optimistic and expansive influence, and the mighty lord of the planetary powers rolls into flirty Libra, your fifth house of romance, children and speculation on September 9 for a yearlong stay. Ego-boosting romantic attractions are in the wind; relationships with children will blossom, and you'll need to control the urge to blow it all on the ponies.
This should be a creative and enjoyable dish, when romance, pleasure, and creative, egoboosting fun is the underlying flavour. It improves your lovelife, presents investment opportunities and creates happier relations with children. A good thing all round, really! Speculative opportunities will present themselves, so money can be made. The Twins love to throw the money around, but remember, Jupiter tends to excess. You will be inclined to take some judicious risks with gambling and speculative interests, but if you base these risks on a well-thought-through foundation, making use of a mixture of your intuition and expertise, you should do very well.
Jupiter turns retrograde during the forecast period between February 6th and June 9th 2017. Your life-ruler remains in Libra until October 10th, 2017, then steps into Scorpio, the sign of the Scorpion. Your health should improve and work will be more fulfilling over the ensuing year. Check out the indications for 2017/18 here later in the year, when I will record them in another forecast. In the meantime, check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Cancer, the Crab
September 9 sees Jupiter moving into charming Libra, your fourth house of home, family, domestic conditions—and fruits of the soil. This is the house of beginnings and endings, so prepare to take your life to a new level. The months ahead signal the start of a twelve-year cycle of learning and new experiences for the Crab, so your life must take things to a new level, or relationships, employment and other forms of personal interaction will likely fall away. It's the right time for real estate and home renovation, or perhaps selling up and relocating to a grander residence, the home of your dreams.
You will feel the call of higher education or a particular study, receive advanced training, or take on long-distance travel, writing, publishing, or promotion. In the end, you will substantially expand your personal, professional, and intellectual horizons. Decisions you make now, especially those influenced by people you meet, will be catalysts for new ventures that affect the next twelve years of your life.
Jupiter's retrograde phase happens in the sign of the Scales between February 6 and June 9 2017, a period during which the gains you have made can be settled and consolidated. Jupiter leaves Libra and enters Scorpio on October 10, 2017, a more favourable position for the intuitive Crab. Sexy Scorpio is your solar fifth house, so romantic connections, relationships with children, speculative activities and creative endeavour will hit the heights! I will provide more details of the Jupiter in Scorpio phase next year, when we get closer to the actual cosmic experience. For now, check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Leo, the Lion
On September 9, Jupiter rolls forward into pleasant Libra, your third house of communication, siblings, local issues and education. This promises to be a much more enjoyable twelvemonth for the Lion. You'll be running from pillar to post, chasing bargains and checking out the latest in computers, phones and gadgetry of all kinds. Your brothers, sisters, neighbours, and people in your local environment will feature. Communications, travel and networking widen your circle of contacts through exchanging and sharing ideas and information. Success comes through developing your mechanical skills, through travel, or in promotional activities that improve your status. It's the right time to buy telephones, computers, answering machines, or other communication devices. Creative writing, publishing, or educational interests are definitely the go in coming months.
Jupiter moves into a retrograde phase every twelve months or so, and this year the retro period begins in Libra on February 6, lasting until June 9, 2017. This is a time for consolidation. Shining Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th, 2017, so make the most of this favourable phase. Jupiter's subsequent shift into Scorpio, when you will need to take your life to a new level, will be discussed in a later piece. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Virgo, the Virgin
On September 9, Jupiter moves out of your sign and into Libra, your second house of personal finances and values. Spending will be up on luxuries and you will be brought face to face with some of your most cherished views on life, the universe and everything. You will need to control the urge to splurge—and your values and opinions will come under pressure, probably through the influence of philosophies or religions that are different to the ones you grew up with. You should do better this year through getting a grip on how to allocate your resources and control the wiggly bits! You might even lose some weight! Jupiter wants you to go all out to impress people, tempting you to spend on luxury items and status symbols. Money is the source of pleasure – which is fine if you can afford to spend it! How badly do you really need that new i-pad? Other expenditures concern higher education, political interests, religious or spiritual activities, travel, publishing and cultural pursuits.
Fortunate Jupiter sails through Libra until October 10th, 2017, but there is a retrograde phase between February 6 and June 9, 2017. From October 10th on, Scorpio, your solar third house, will receive benefits over the ensuing year. Communications, close connections in the family and the neighbourhood, education and travel will feature, as will expressing your ideas in a concrete form, such as a blog, a video, or other written form of expression. This will be discussed in an article on this site as we get closer to the actual change of phase next year. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Libra, the Scales
On September 9, Jupiter, the fortunate king of the planetary powers, strides forward into the cardinal air sign, Libra. This move to your sign intensifies his powers. Your uniqueness as an individual comes under the spotlight, and you are surrounded by an aura of importance, as though the world depends on you! It's time to get to know yourself better. What makes you tick, and how can you take it to the max? Be careful, or you'll find yourself putting on weight, as Jupiter's expansive influence can have quite literal effects.
This transit bolsters your confidence and gives you the feeling that everything has taken a turn for the better, but you have actually reached the culmination of something you cranked into action some twelve years back. It may have been a marriage, or a business venture, but whatever it was (and you know...!), it must attain a new and higher level of growth and happiness—or now is the beginning of the end. Expansion of your ego-needs may be what forces the issue, as you seek pleasure and fulfilment.
This transit may give people the impression that you have a higher status or importance than may really be the case. It can and should be a period to gain a much better understanding of yourself and to explore ways you can become even better. But the pursuit of knowledge and greater spiritual awareness can also be about ego-gratification, unless you are rather more internally perceptive than usual. Self-inflating tactics are not necessary under this transit, because recognition and honour will come without your having to demand them.
On February 6, Jupiter turns retrograde in your sign. This will see a period lasting until June 9th, 2017, in which it will be important to consolidate your gains and learn to manage your destiny, as Venus experiences a retro phase during Jupiter's retrograde in Libra. On October 10th, 2017, Jupiter leaves Libra and enters Scorpio, your financial house, where you must deal cautiously with the gains you have made over the preceding year. Jupiter's transit of Scorpio will be discussed in a subsequent article. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Scorpio, the Scorpion
On September 9th, Jupiter moves forward into indecisive Libra, your solar twelfth house of seclusion, of secrets, sorrows and issues buried behind-the-scenes. Any benefits or gains may be hidden over ensuing months, or at least not obvious to others, but this is an ideal time to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions (such as hospitals, prisons, government departments, universities and the like), your partner's health and concealed matters in general. Resist any tendency for self-pity and unnecessary guilt—or for using guilt as a weapon to get others to do what you want.
You can develop your inner strength and power under this transit through expanding your psychic energy and intuitive ability. It's time to confront your hidden fears and worry. This is also a period when if you need help, it is likely to arrive just in time to save the day, and it may come from hidden or unexpected sources.
The retrograde period comes between Februay 6 and June 9th, then Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th, when he strides forward into your own sign, the sign of the Scorpion. This really takes the pressure off! Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Sagittarius, the Archer
On September 9th, Jupiter, your planetary ruler and the Greater Fortune, moves forward into lovely Libra, your solar eleventh house of friends, hopes and wishes. The income you gain from your career will grow, and you can also expect some financial assistance from friends and associates. The coming twelvemonth will see your friendships increase, while your relationships with the friends you already have will be expanded. Children in your life, especially those who are not biologically your own, will develop along a more beneficial path. Joining or participating in clubs and organizations will bring splendid results. Your success comes primarily through an emphasis on the role you play in the lives of others, as well as a need for more freedom within those roles. During this phase your own efforts will lead to success, notably in the attainment of your hopes and dreams.
Jupiter's annual retro phase occurs in Libra, beginning in 2017 on February 6 and lasting until June 9th. Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th 2017, when he rolls on into the sign of the Scorpion, your solar twelfth house of secrets, solitude and subconscious motivations. You need to work steadily and maintain a philosophical approach, even if you are feeling blue. Help is likely to come when you need it, probably from an unlikely source. This will be discussed in an article on this site when the time grows nearer. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Capricorn, the Sea-Goat
On September 9, mighty Jupiter moves forward into Libra, your solar mid-heaven, the house of career and public image. This brings a yearlong phase of remarkable good fortune, and of aid from important people. Make sure you go for what you want, because you deserve it! Your career and public position will expand, and a family member may also receive recognition, which in itself will be beneficial for you, as you begin to actualise your long term plans. Success may seem to fall in your lap, but don't take your luck for granted. Whatever you gain with ease may just as easily be lost, if you do not take the accompanying responsibility, or ownership.
A retrograde period begins in Libra on February 6 and ends on June 9th, 2017. Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th, 2017, when he cruises into the sexy sign of the Scorpion, your solar eleventh house of friends, hopes and wishes. This outgoing phase will extend over the ensuing year—and can help you make your dreams come true! I will examine this fortunate phase here later in the year. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Aquarius, the Water-Bearer
On September 9, mighty Jupiter, lord of fortune, moves forward into delightful Libra, your solar ninth house. This is a very favourable position for the Aquarian, being the house of fame and travel, of spiritual development and cultural pursuits. It brings a yearlong phase of remarkable good fortune, and the potential of great honour. Your experiences will broaden your intellectual horizons through higher education, advanced training, study or the use of foreign languages, or long distance travel.
Under this influence you may develop a desire to expand your spiritual awareness, political interests, and cultural appreciation. Success is also possible if you are involved in writing, publishing, arts and entertainment (especially theatre and dance), finance and investment, advertising, or promotion. Court decisions are favoured, and dealings with in-laws should be beneficial. However, it would be unwise to become complaisant, or to take your good fortune for granted. Concentrate on making the most of it!
The retrograde phase during the forecast period begins in Libra on February 9th and ends next year on March 6th. Jupiter remains in your mid-heaven until October 10th, 2017, when he rolls into Scorpio, the sign on your solar mid-heaven, the area of life governing career, public image and general success. This prosperous phase brings a period during which you will experience a sense of easy fortune and will be surrounded by good luck and personal advancement. I will take a deeper look at this in a subsequent article. Check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Pisces, the Fishes
September 9 brings your planetary life-ruler Jupiter forward into Libra, your eighth house of sex, death and taxes. Financial joint ventures will take your attention, yet you'll find time to investigate the hidden side of life—and may benefit from an inheritance! Debts at this time need to be paid, or collected as the case may be. If you need financial assistance, it's a good time to ask. Analysis, investigation, or research all lead to increased knowledge and growth in consciousness, and a much deeper level of satisfaction bubbles up. This comes from psychological fulfilment, just as much as physical gratification. Increased sexual pleasure is in the stars for Pisces, but the broader possibilities awaken a deeper understanding of the nature and purpose of sex, as well as other mysteries of nature.
The retrograde phase during the forecast period occurs in Libra between February 9th and March 6th of 2017. Jupiter remains in Libra until October 10th, 2017, then intense Scorpio, your solar ninth house, takes the cosmic focus for more than a year. You will take more of an interest in cultural pursuits, higher education, publishing, spiritual growth, travel, political and religious issues, and broadening your mind in general. I will analyse this excellent phase here later in the year. For now, check out your Year Ahead in 2016!
Remember, Jupiter turns retrograde in Libra on February 6, 2017, then returns to direct motion through the zodiac on June 9, 2017, still in Libra. Jupiter leaves Libra and enters Scorpio October 10, 2017.
