Jupiter Direct in Capricorn
An Auspicious Moment in Time
The cycles of astrology are reflected in our daily lives, as well as informing the patterns of our human creativity, whether artistic or musical, social, political or financial. Jupiter turns retrograde once a year, and on September 8, 2008 he returns to direct motion in fortunate trine aspect to stern Saturn. This rare and magnificent cosmic pattern marks a truly auspicious moment in time. Jupiter is the planetary Lord of Pisces and Sagittarius, but this massive planet affects us all on his stately journey through the zodiac.
On September 8, 2008, shining Jupiter, the proud king of the ancient gods, returns to direct motion through the zodiac after a lengthy period of retrograde motion that commenced in early May 2008. Each year, Jupiter turns retrograde for approximately 120 days and the periods when he is stationary in the zodiac, pausing at the beginning and end of these retrograde phases, are highly significant in terms of their effect on life on Earth. When Jupiter turns direct, the week or so either side of the date of turning (when Jupiter is "Stationary Direct") is ideal for making or implementing decisions regarding the year ahead in terms of the matters ruled by Jupiter, but the flavour depends on where the change happens in your personal chart. In this article I will briefly outline the influences for each sign, so check your Sun Sign in the box below – and if you know your rising sign, check that too, for a more comprehensive forecast.
One of the most potent forces in our solar system, Jupiter has been retrograde in Capricorn since May 2008, generating circumstances connected mainly with ambition, responsibility, government, self-reliance and self-control, with the desire to rise to a position of authority over others. Capricorn is known for ingenuity, resourcefulness and mechanical ability. Trust-worthy, sincere and honest, this position enjoys general popularity. Unfortunately, however, when Jupiter is afflicted in Capricorn it produces a miserly disposition that denies all bar the bare necessities. The natural frugality of Capricorn can be expanded by the magnifying glass of Jupiter, generating an undue focus on security – and the desire to establish oneself securely in the world! In my previous article on Jupiter's entry into Capricorn in December 2007, I noted that the cosmos was generating a cautious sense of optimism combined with a need for stability and material security in the collective, especially at a political, financial and religious level (these are the areas mainly governed by Jupiter).
Jupiter rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. He rules our optimism and aspirations, including our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure – and moving into unknown territory.
Pluto Turns Direct
It is significant that at this time dark Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, has returned in retrograde motion to just short of the partile (exact) conjunction with the Galactic Centre (GC), turning direct on September 9. This point, the centre of our galaxy (the Milky Way), was discovered in 1932 and is thought to contain a massive black hole with the mass of some four million times that of our own Sun. It has a significant effect when aspected, inclining people whose charts are affected to take a central role in affairs and to have a sense of cosmic destiny, often associated with a crisis of faith. Curiously, this part of the zodiac has long been known for its power of transformation, even centuries prior to discovery of the GC.
Pluto itself is a huge force for transformation through the overcoming of obstruction, leading to a sense of cosmic regeneration, which will be enlivened in the last few months of 2008, before Pluto re-enters Capricorn on November 27, a new start at the New Moon in Sagittarius. Pluto requires us to resolve the old issues that have been holding us back for a long time now, as the last few degrees of Sagittarius are Saturnine, except for the very last, which is forward-looking and ruled by Mars. Pluto occupies this warlike degree between Oct 24 (when the Sun enters Scorpio) and Nov 27.
Jupiter Trine Saturn
This is a very fortunate influence, though its impact will be modified by how it affects your personal chart, and the degree of your own maturity and experience. Hard work, organization, and careful planning will pay off – and benefits may come your way thanks to your seniority or authority. Restrictions and responsibilities can be eased, or even disappear.
The key to the good fortune will be marked by a wise approach to traditional values and experience. This aspect will contribute to your personal growth and prosperity and may also bring you under the influence of wiser, more experienced mentors and leaders who have what you lack.
Jupiter trine Saturn awakens a strong character with a profoundly philosophical mind, giving a benevolent disposition with a strong sense of justice. The honour and esteem of the community is thus important under this transit. People in public life or with other major responsibilities will be inclined to carry through plans and fulfil their obligations, but will take a wiser, more conservative approach. The authorities and other sources of power or influence (big business; banks; institutions; media etc.) will be willing to help others, but only if they in turn help themselves. Children born at this time will carry this imprint.
The Greater Benefic
Luck and wellbeing are primarily governed by Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic (Venus is the Lesser Benefic). When well-aspected, the Thunder God brings superb opportunities for expansion and success. Poorly aspected, he generates over-confidence and foolhardy actions with little care for the consequences.
The week either side of Jupiter's direct station is the ideal time to make or implement long-term decisions regarding matters covered by his current position in your horoscope. Here is a brief outline of how Jupiter affects each sign as he turns direct again. The Thunder God remains in earthy Capricorn until January 5, 2009, which is when he moves into Aquarius (an Air Sign). Capricorn, the Sea-Goat
Jupiter turns direct in fortunate trine aspect to your life-ruler Saturn. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Goat. You have reached the culmination of something you began or gained approximately twelve years ago. A marriage, a business venture, or something else important, it must take you forward to a higher level of personal growth and happiness, or now is the beginning of the end. Expansion of your ego-needs may consciously or subconsciously be what forces the issue. The pursuit of pleasure can become a source of ego-satisfaction, as can the pursuit of knowledge and greater spiritual awareness. You will receive the greatest benefit through structuring your goals and taking a leap of faith yet tempering the urge to take a risk with the flavour of experience. Put your plans into action; push yourself forward and achieve your ambitions. Pleasure and recognition are heading your way.
Aquarius, the Water-Bearer
Jupiter turning direct in your twelfth house of secrets, sorrows and sub-conscious motivation brings some advantage and hidden gains – even healing can be yours, if there is a need. Jupiter is a healing planet and Saturn is your traditional life-ruler, and these two are in a beautiful trine aspect on this day. Help may come from an unexpected quarter, just in time to save the day. Fraternal or charitable institutions, connection with government departments, large corporations, hospitals, universities and the like will be good fields for involvement. The focus this year is on behind-the-scenes or otherwise solitary activities, even mystical or astrological studies, so any plans you have in these directions can be activated now. Benefits or gains may be hidden, or at least not as obvious to others as might normally be the case, but you definitely need to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions, partner's health and concealed matters in general. Anything connected with the ocean may also attract you, either as a fascinating field of study or as a satisfying hobby. Avoid gambling and extravagance — though if you are in the entertainment business, you should do well.
Pisces, the Fishes
As Jupiter, your life-ruler turns direct in your house of friends, hopes and wishes, you will be propelled forward into activating your dreams and aspirations, making money from career-related activities and having a better relationship with other people's children in your life. Saturn in your seventh house and Jupiter in your eleventh suggests good fortune through partners, friends, associates and even through lawsuits and competitors. Make your plans clear now. The income you gain from your career should expand and financial assistance from friends and associates will be available should you need it. Be content with what the world sends you, but if you owe friends money, make the effort to repay it before this energy diminishes. Matters connected with clubs or associations will pay dividends through positive action over the coming months, so join in and work towards the common goal.
Aries, the Ram
Jupiter turning direct in your mid-heaven brings good luck and fortunate developments in career and public life. Since Saturn too is in the picture, you can plan for increased responsibility in your daily tasks and routines, with a good likelihood of promotion, or if you are an employer, for taking on more employees as a result of increased business. You will attract the attention of prominent people who will be only too pleased to lift you into a better place, whether in the church, state, law or public affairs. You may even make a bundle through good luck rather than good judgement and if you are so inclined can feature in the stock exchange, banking, shipping, trade or trusts concerned with the public wellbeing. Make your plans now and set efforts into action, especially those that come to fruition next year.
Taurus, the Bull
Jupiter turning direct in Capricorn is a very favourable development for Taurus, especially considering this year's powerful trine with Saturn. Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Virgo create a Grand Trine with Taurus, the ideal aspect for the expression of your talents. These three are all Earth Signs, the symbols of material security, pleasure and a stable determined position. Plan for the remainder of this year to activate your intent, as your long-term aspirations slot nicely into place, particularly those connected with children, speculative activities, travel, higher education and personal development. Religious or spiritual awakening is more than possible too, as the coming months have much potential for success and personal growth, especially as a result of decisions you take now. You'll be keen to travel and overseas contacts will feature strongly in your life. A second marriage, or anything to do with in-laws and your partner's relations can be satisfactorily organized now.
Gemini, the Twins
Financial gain is indicated through marriage and partnerships, but move with caution if taking on loans, mortgages or other forms of debt. Jupiter turning direct in the sign of the canny Goat gives lenders the advantage, and Mercury turning retrograde later in the month does not aid the Geminian clarity of reasoning. This said, if you are looking to buy or refinance the family home, the trine between Jupiter and Saturn is favourable, and Pluto turning direct the next day will enable more freedom of movement by your spouse or partner. Because Jupiter is in your solar eighth house, your sexuality is likely to take a deeper form of expression than usual. If you have been drawn to the occult and other hidden subjects related to the mysteries of life, you can make good strides forward in this direction, especially if your plans extend into next year when Jupiter enters Aquarius, which will be very favourable for the expression of the higher mind. Joint income, investments, collection of debts, taxes, insurance, inheritance and the settlement of estate matters are all areas that feature should be resolved before the end of the year.
Cancer, the Crab
If you have not already formed that successful partnership, alliance, or marriage, these matters can be finalised in coming months. Anything connected with the local area, neighbours, siblings, education or travel will be valuable and your self-expression will take a more serious tone. If you are writing a book, or a blog, or any media presentation, the long-term outlook is excellent. Court cases, legal decisions, partnership issues and any open conflicts are likely to be resolved in your favour. Keeping a conservative attitude will serve you well in the months ahead.
Leo, the Lion
Put plans into motion to improve your working routines as Jupiter turns direct; relations with subordinates can also be improved, though you'll still be happiest when working unsupervised. Jupiter's transit through the sign of the Goat gives a much more favourable outlook for your health and for relationships with co-workers, employees and associated professionals and his trine with Saturn on the same day means matters connected with institutions, government departments, hospitals, universities and the like will develop well. Your work and responsibilities will stabilise now; there is still room for expansion, but do not try to do it all yourself. Delegate where possible: don't believe you are invincible, as pride often comes before a fall. Your job may require more travel, or advanced training, but you should not take your health too much for granted. Avoid procrastination and overeating.
Virgo, the Virgin
This favours a year of romance and pleasure for you, dear Virgo, and the day Jupiter turns direct is particularly favourable, due to the Jupiter/Saturn trine, a fortunate aspect for you. Speculative opportunities can still present themselves this year, so money can be made, but with stern Saturn in your sign, you should not set the bar too high, nor should you be unduly critical of yourself. Formalise your plans this week and remember not to be over-confident, as Jupiter tends to excess. The next few months are very beneficial, even though partners may behave somewhat erratically from time to time. You will be inclined to take some judicious risks with gambling and speculative interests, but if you base these risks on a well-thought-through foundation, making use of your experience and expertise, you should do very well during the remainder of the year.
Libra, the Scales
This year has marked the beginning of a twelve-year cycle of learning and new experiences for Libra, as Capricorn symbolises your solar fourth house, the house of beginnings and endings. Your life must take things to a new level, or relationships, employment and other forms of personal interaction will likely fall away. Jupiter turning direct in trine to Saturn lets you make long term financial plans that will open your eyes to the potential. Pleasant domestic relations and harmonious family surroundings are favoured. Real estate and home renovation, or perhaps selling up and relocating to the home of your dreams is part of this potential, so if you have not already done so, the astrological energy is good, despite the economic downturn. You may still feel the call of higher education or a particular study, receive advanced training, or take on long distance travel, writing, publishing, or promotion. Decisions you make now, especially those influenced by people you meet, will be catalysts for new ventures that affect the next twelve years of your life.
Scorpio, the Scorpion
Finalise any remaining travel plans and be sure to check any educational arrangements for the new year. Jupiter turning direct gives you a firm boost, and the trine to Saturn adds stability to your career income and aids long term relationships with friends and associates. Your brothers, sisters, neighbours and the people you meet in your local environment can be the source of good fortune. Success comes through developing your mechanical skills, travel, or promotional activities that improve your status. It's the right time to acquire telephones, computers, answering machines, or other communication devices. Creative writing, publishing, or educational interests are highly favoured in coming months.
Sagittarius, the Archer
As Jupiter turns direct your house of finances, sensible decisions about the proper allocation of your resources and stable long term plans are favoured. Career decisions are also favoured, as bosses will be impressed with your careful planning and appreciate your more serious approach. The deep consideration you have been giving your values and priorities (especially financial ones!) over the past few months now needs to be assigned and put to practical use. Some of your cherished values and opinions will come under pressure, probably through the influence of philosophies or religions that are different to the ones you grew up with. Jupiter stimulates you to go for status to impress people, tempting you to spend on luxury items and status symbols, but remember that under this influence money is the source of pleasure – which is fine if you can afford to spend it! Other expenditures concern higher education, political interests, religious or spiritual activities, travel, publishing and cultural pursuits.
Conservative Capricorn is not particularly expressive of Jupiter's optimistic and expansive energies, as it is the sign of Jupiter's Fall, a traditional debility. People feel more cautious than they did at the same time last year, with good reason! However, the trine to Saturn gives us cause to expect that the long-term foundations laid now will support us far into the future. The two weeks surrounding the direct station (when Jupiter pauses before starting to move forward again) are ideal for making or implementing relevant decisions that have long-term consequences. It's worth keeping in mind that Jupiter changes signs to Aquarius on January 5, 2009, so decisions we make now will be most readily put into action before that date.
