Jupiter Enters Cancer 2013
idealistic, humanitarian & benevolent
Every year, Jupiter, Lord of Fortune, moves from one sign to the next, setting the stage of human consciousness for the ensuing year. June 2013 sees him staggering out of the arid realms of Gemini, his detriment, and splashing into the fertile waters of the Crab, his exaltation. Cancer, the cardinal water sign, is a most favourable position for Jupiter. Our most idealistic, humanitarian and benevolent inclinations are awakened, especially at the political, financial, and cultural or religious levels (these are the areas mainly governed by Jupiter). Rob Tillett, the founder of AstroScope Me, discusses the effects these new transits will have on the various signs of the zodiac.

On June 26th, 2013, Jupiter, the noble lord of the ancient gods, moves from a less than favoured position in Gemini, the Twins—an air sign known for its wit, cleverness and intellectual propensities—to Cancer the Crab, known for its powerful emotions. Imaginative and creative potential is released under this expansive transit which begins only three days after a magnificent Full Moon in Capricorn, a Supermoon. It will be accompanied by a good dose of financial acumen and commitment to family.
Whenever Jupiter changes signs, a new flavour is brought to the underlying experience of our lives, giving a subliminal boost to the matters governed by the sign and house concerned. Jupiter in the heavens usually remains in each sign of the zodiac for approximately twelve months, taking twelve years to transit the entire zodiac. At the end of each of these cycles, related matters must progress to a new level, or else they will fall away into obscurity and eventual oblivion. 2013 sees a truly powerful move for Jupiter, from a position of weakness in Gemini, his detriment, to a position of strength in Cancer, his exaltation.
Jupiter, the Great Healer
Jupiter brings a richer colour to the world when he shines in Cancer. Here he awakens a fruitful imagination, promising the fulfilment of Utopian dreams. Jupiter is the great healer and should open up the higher mind of humanity to mystical, even transcendental subjects. On the more mundane side, Jupiter's expansive character will bring more confidence to business, societal and governmental arenas, but we need to beware that this renewed confidence and optimim does not encourage over-confidence and rash risk-taking.
Jupiter in Cancer is also canny and practical, so under his influence over the ensuing 12 months we become ambitious and goal-oriented, seeking to achieve worldly success in investments, real estate, lands and mines. At a more personal level, we become fonder of our own country, being inclined to remain within the secure environs of home and of family.
People are more subject to emotional extremes, so we must be careful to avoid over-reacting, especially to political and religious propaganda. A rich knowledge of human emotions and the ability to control the power and sensitivity of feelings is what Jupiter can bring in the year ahead.
During periods when Jupiter is afflicted, the collective mind is not so well balanced, unleashing a tendency to throw money around like confetti! Although Cancer is by-and-large a conservative influence, over-confident or reckless risk-taking at times may cause loss in business (or indeed any) ventures and the mighty can fall from grace with a crash. Jupiter in Cancer warns that the very areas in which we are likely to experience growth and expansion have a tendency to get out of control. How inclined or efficient we may be at keeping control, or regaining control when it has been lost, is determined by other factors in an individual's, a corporation's, or a community's natal chart.
The Cardinal Cross
On June 26th, Jupiter's aspects are significant. According to the American Ephemeris, mighty Jupiter crosses the border out of his fall into friendlier territory at 01:41 UT, which is later in the day for most of the world, but earlier (actually on June 25) for the Americas. When this action takes place, Jupiter, although in a stronger position, forms a stressful square aspect to the Aries Point. The Aries Point, the first degree of Aries, is the beginning of the tropical zodiac, a very potent position. In 2010 this point was powerfully activated by a conjunction of Jupiter with disruptive Uranus and with Uranus still in Aries in 2013, the square reactivates the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the position, subjecting the world to fiery conflict, natural destruction and military action, especially once Mars enters Cancer on July 13. You can read more on this topic in my article on Jupiter in Aries, but it's a reactivation of the Cardinal Cross between Jupiter and Mars in Cancer, Uranus in Aries, Pluto in Capricorn. Mars moving into Libra some months down the track will bring some impressive cosmic high jinks, as Mars retrogrades through Libra next year. I will discuss in detail this in my forthcoming Mars Retrograde article.
Jupiter and Uranus are thus in a square aspect from the start, but this aspect becomes partile (exact) at the Full Moon on August 21. Jupiter square Uranus provokes impulsive action by individuals and even world leaders; this is liable through sudden or unexpected turns to lead to their undoing. Loss by speculation, lawsuits and impulsive extravagance are also indicated, as well as changes of occupation and residence, loss of friends and reputation. Those affected will be deliberately confrontational, while remaining stubbornly entrenched in antagonistic modes. New endeavors attract massive energy and attention, only to be dropped like hot potatos. People's behaviour tends to be inconstant and unreliable under this aspect. Eccentric religious beliefs, mysticism, and occultism are stimulated.
Mars entering Cancer on July 13th energizes the Grand Cross and on July 27th actitivates the partile opposition to Pluto in Capricorn. This aspect mark a test between the forces of spiritual renewal and the egoic urge to self-aggrandizement. It is a life-challenging aspect that promises death through war, crime, or catastrophe. We must use this power constructively, because, aside from any external stresses, our actions will have far-reaching consequences for ourselves as well as others. The situation at the end of July is tense and aggravated by the square of Mars to Uranus. This influence implies rash as well as unpredictable actions, so be sure to take care during this period. Keep in mind that not only are our actions unpredictable, but so are their consequences. Whatever we may hope to gain by them is not likely to be what turns out in the end.
Jupiter is a Time Lord
The cycles of Jupiter, in coordination with the cycles of Saturn, the other "Great Chronocrator", or "Time Lord", direct the energies that have significant effects on the collective being. These are especially marked by the conjunctions between these two massive forces, but also by the sign changes, hard aspects and retrograde periods.
Jupiter and Saturn are Time Lords
The cycles of astrology are reflected in our daily lives, as well as informing the patterns of our human creativity, whether artistic or musical, social, political or financial. The trine aspect between Jupiter and Saturn always marks periods of general good fortune, especially with Jupiter in exaltation. Hard work, organisation and careful planning are favoured and should pay off. Tradition, maturity and experience are the touchwords, with a clear vision of the future based on firm foundations what we can work towards.
In 2013 we will see Jupiter trine Saturn in mid-July (exact July 17), with Jupiter accelerating in Cancer and Saturn still more or less stationary after a long retro phase in Scorpio. Cancer and Scorpio are both Water Signs, so the effects on the collective will be quite encouraging, as sensitivity and feeling align. Jupiter Pluvius (the Rain-Bearer) has nevertheless been hard at work, bringing rains, floods and fearsome weather conditions across the globe, but especially in India and China, so we may be required to give back some of the prosperity or success we have gained, in order to help others get ahead. However, even if we and our governments are willing, we may simply lack the means to do so—at least for the time being.
Jupiter turns retrograde in the 21st degree of Cancer on November 7th, 2013, conjunct the unfortunate star Castor, "The Mortal Twin". Castor is less calamitous than Pollux, his immortal brother, but is nevertheless inclined to violence and mischief. Jupiter's influence during the retro phase tends to solidify our achievements.
However, during the last week of January and the first week of February 2014, Jupiter opposes Pluto, so power and success are seductive traps over this period -- and will be grossly mismanaged and overrated. Situations that promise greater personal influence or an opportunity to manipulate something to your own advantage are to be avoided. Once this period has ended there will be time enough to consider or take advantage of the offer. Find a constructive way to work around them or with them. This is not a favorable time for matters that involve inheritance, taxes, insurance and debt. Jupiter remains retrograde until March 6th, 2014.
Growth and Expansion
Jupiter rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. He rules our optimism and aspirations, including our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure – and moving into unknown territory.
Luck and wellbeing are primarily governed by Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic (Venus is the Lesser Benefic). When well-aspected, the Thunder God brings superb opportunities for expansion and success. Poorly aspected, he generates over-confidence and foolhardy actions with little care for the consequences.
Here is a brief outline of the effects on each sign as Jupiter enters Cancer for a period of a little over twelve months. Remember to check the forecast for your rising sign too, for a more balanced reading. To estimate your rising sign, click here.
Aries, the Ram
June 26 sees Jupiter moving into moody Cancer, your fourth house of home, family, domestic conditions—and fruits of the soil. This is the house of beginnings and endings, so prepare to take your life to a new level. The months ahead signal the start of a twelve-year cycle of learning and new experiences for the Ram, so your life must take things to a new level, or relationships, employment and other forms of personal interaction will likely fall away. It's the right time for real estate and home renovation, or perhaps selling up and relocating to a grander residence, the home of your dreams.
Taurus, the Bull
You will feel the call of higher education or a particular study, receive advanced training, or take on long-distance travel, writing, publishing, or promotion. In the end, you will substantially expand your personal, professional, and intellectual horizons. Decisions you make now, especially those influenced by people you meet, will be catalysts for new ventures that affect the next twelve years of your life.
Jupiter's retrograde phase happens in the sign of the Crab between November 7 and March 6, 2014, a period during which the gains you have made can be sttled and consolidated. Jupiter leaves Cancer and enters Leo on July 16, 2014, a more favourable position for the restless Ram. Fiery Leo is your solar fifth house, so romantic connections, relationships with children, speculative activities and creative endeavour will hit the heights! I will provide more details of the Jupiter in Leo phase next year, when we get closer to the actual cosmic experience. For now, check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26, Jupiter rolls forward into agreeable Cancer, your third house of communication, siblings, local issues and education. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, so this promises to be a much more enjoyable twelvemonth for the Bull. You'll be running from pillar to post, chasing bargains and checking out the latest in computers, phones and gadgetry of all kinds. Your brothers, sisters, neighbours, and people in your local environment will feature. Communications, travel and networking widen your circle of contacts through exchanging and sharing ideas and information. Success comes through developing your mechanical skills, through travel, or in promotional activities that improve your status. It's the right time to buy telephones, computers, answering machines, or other communication devices. Creative writing, publishing, or educational interests are definitely the go in coming months.
Gemini, the Twins
Jupiter moves into a retrograde phase every twelve months or so, and this year the retro period begins in Cancer on November 7, lasting until March 6, 2014. This is a time for consolidation. Shining Jupiter remains in Cancer until July 16th, 2014, so make the most of this favourable phase. Jupiter's subsequent shift into Leo, when you will need to take your life to a new level, will be discussed in a later piece. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26, Jupiter moves out of your sign and into Cancer, your second house of personal finances and values. Spending will be up on luxuries and you will be brought face to face with some of your most cherished views on life, the universe and everything. You will need to control the urge to splurge—and as Gemini is not noted for a firm grasp of the financial basics, perhaps you could consult your Cancerian friends on how to transform your bank account from red to black. Your values and opinions will come under pressure, probably through the influence of philosophies or religions that are different to the ones you grew up with. You should do better this year through getting a grip on how to allocate your resources and control the wiggly bits! You might even lose some weight! Jupiter wants you to go all out to impress people, tempting you to spend on luxury items and status symbols. Money is the source of pleasure – which is fine if you can afford to spend it! How badly do you really need that new i-pad? Other expenditures concern higher education, political interests, religious or spiritual activities, travel, publishing and cultural pursuits.
Cancer, the Crab
Fortunate Jupiter sails through Cancer until July 16th, 2014, but there is a retrograde phase between November 7 this year and March 6, 2014. From July 16 on, Leo, your solar third house, will receive benefits over the ensuing year. Communications, close connections in the family and the neighbourhood, education and travel will feature, as will expressing your ideas in a concrete form, such as a blog, a video, or other written form of expression. This will be discussed in an article on this site as we get closer to the actual change of phase next year. In the meantime, Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26, Jupiter, the fortunate king of the planetary powers, strides forward into the cardinal water sign, Cancer, the sign of his exaltation. This intensifies his powers. Your uniqueness as an individual comes under the spotlight, and you are surrounded by an aura of importance, as though the world depends on you! It's time to get to know yourself better. What makes you tick, and how can you take it to the max? Be careful, or you'll find yourself putting on weight, as Jupiter's expansive influence can have quite literal effects.
Leo, the Lion
This transit bolsters your confidence and gives you the feeling that everything has taken a turn for the better, but you have actually reached the culmination of something you cranked into action some twelve years back. It may have been a marriage, or a business venture, but whatever it was (and you know...!), it must attain a new and higher level of growth and happiness—or now is the beginning of the end. Expansion of your ego-needs may be what forces the issue, as you seek pleasure and fulfilment.
This transit may give people the impression that you have a higher status or importance than may really be the case. It can and should be a period to gain a much better understanding of yourself and to explore ways you can become even better. But the pursuit of knowledge and greater spiritual awareness can also be about ego-gratification, unless you are rather more internally perceptive than usual. Self-inflating tactics are not necessary under this transit, because recognition and honour will come without your having to demand them.
On November 7, Jupiter turns retrograde in your sign. This will see a period lasting until March 6th, 2014, in which it will be important to consolidate your gains and learn to manage your destiny, as Venus and Mars both experience retro phases during Jupiter's retrograde in Cancer. On July 16th, 2014, Jupiter leaves Cancer and enters Leo, your financial house, where you must deal cautiously with the gains you have made over the preceding year. Jupiter's transit of Leo will be discussed in a subsequent article. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26th, Jupiter moves forward into emotional Cancer, your solar twelfth house of seclusion, of secrets, sorrows and issues buried behind-the-scenes. Any benefits or gains may be hidden over ensuing months, or at least not obvious to others, but this is an ideal time to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions (such as hospitals, prisons, government departments, universities and the like), your partner's health and concealed matters in general. Resist any tendency for self-pity and unnecessary guilt—or for using guilt as a weapon to get others to do what you want.
Virgo, the Virgin
You can develop your inner strength and power under this transit through expanding your psychic energy and intuitive ability. It's time to confront your hidden fears and worry. This is also a period when if you need help, it is likely to arrive just in time to save the day, and it may come from hidden or unexpected sources.
The retrograde period comes between November 7 and March 6th, then Jupiter remains in Cancer until July 16th, when he strides forward into your own sign, the sign of the Lion. This really takes the pressure off! Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26th, Jupiter, the Greater Fortune, moves forward into charming Cancer, your solar eleventh house of friends, hopes and wishes. The income you gain from your career will grow, and you can also expect some financial assistance from friends and associates. The coming twelvemonth will see your friendships increase, while your relationships with the friends you already have will be expanded. Children in your life, especially those who are not biologically your own, will develop along a more beneficial path. Joining or participating in clubs and organizations will bring splendid results. Your success comes primarily through an emphasis on the role you play in the lives of others, as well as a need for more freedom within those roles. During this phase your own efforts will lead to success, notably in the attainment of your hopes and dreams.
Libra, the Scales
Jupiter's annual retro phase occurs this year in Cancer, beginning on November 7 and lasting until March 6th next year. Jupiter remains in Cancer until July 16th 2014, when he rolls on into the sign of the Lion, your solar twelfth house of secrets, solitude and subconscious motivations. You need to work steadily and maintain a philosophical approach, even if you are feeling blue. Help is likely to come when you need it, probably from an unlikely source. This will be discussed in an article on this site when the time grows nearer. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26, mighty Jupiter moves forward into Cancer, your solar mid-heaven, the house of career and public image. This brings a yearlong phase of remarkable good fortune, and of aid from important people. Make sure you go for what you want, because you deserve it! Your career and public position will expand, and a family member may also receive recognition, which in itself will be beneficial for you, as you begin to actualise your long term plans. Success may seem to fall in your lap, but don't take your luck for granted. Whatever you gain with ease may just as easily be lost, if you do not take the accompanying responsibility, or ownership.
Scorpio, the Scorpion
A retrograde period begins in Cancer on November 7 and ends on March 6th, 2014. Jupiter remains in Cancer until July 16th, 2014, when he cruises into the sign of the Lion, your solar eleventh house of friends, hopes and wishes. This outgoing phase will extend over the ensuing year—and can help you make your dreams come true! I will examine this fortunate phase here later in the year. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26, mighty Jupiter, lord of fortune, moves forward into charming Cancer, your solar ninth house. This is a very favourable position for the Scorpion, being the house of fame and travel, of spiritual development and cultural pursuits. It brings a yearlong phase of remarkable good fortune, and the potential of great honour. Your experiences will broaden your intellectual horizons through higher education, advanced training, study or the use of foreign languages, or long distance travel.
Sagittarius, the Archer
Under this influence you may develop a desire to expand your spiritual awareness, political interests, and cultural appreciation. Success is also possible if you are involved in writing, publishing, arts and entertainment (especially theatre and dance), finance and investment, advertising, or promotion. Court decisions are favoured, and dealings with in-laws should be beneficial. However, it would be unwise to become complaisant, or to take your good fortune for granted. Concentrate on making the most of it!
The retrograde phase during the forecast period begins on November 7th and ends next year on March 6th. Jupiter remains in your mid-heaven until July 16th, 2014, when he rolls into Leo, the sign on your solar mid-heaven, the area of life governing career, public image and general success. This prosperous phase brings a period during which you will experience a sense of easy fortune and will be surrounded by good luck and personal advancement. I will take a deeper look at this in a subsequent article. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
June 26 brings your planetary life-ruler Jupiter forward into Cancer, your eighth house of sex, death and taxes. Financial joint ventures will take your attention, yet you'll find time to investigate the hidden side of life—and may benefit from an inheritance! Debts at this time need to be paid, or collected as the case may be. If you need financial assistance, it's a good time to ask. Analysis, investigation, or research all lead to increased knowledge and growth in consciousness, and a much deeper level of satisfaction bubbles up. This comes from psychological fulfilment, just as much as physical gratification. Increased sexual pleasure is in the stars for Sagittarius, but the broader possibilities awaken a deeper understanding of the nature and purpose of sex, as well as other mysteries of nature.
Capricorn, the Sea-Goat
The retrograde phase during the forecast period occurs in Cancer between November 7th of this year and March 6th of the next. Jupiter remains in Cancer until July 16th, 2014, then fiery Leo, your solar ninth house, takes the cosmic focus for more than a year. You will take more of an interest in cultural pursuits, higher education, publishing, spiritual growth, travel, political and religious issues, and broadening your mind in general. I will analyse this excellent phase here later in the year. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
June 26 brings Jupiter forward into the emotional and intuitive sign of the Crab, your solar seventh house of marriage, partnership and open confrontation. Interaction with important people, especially your partner, spouse or other allies, is especially stimulating. It can bring broader knowledge and new experiences for you. Current partnerships and other alliances (as well as joint ventures) should expand and improve. Marriage is on the cards for many of you, or signing up for a serious, committed partnership. Consultations, legal matters and contract negotiations are favoured. Make sure you don't take others, especially a partner, for granted, as you may become just a bit too cocky under this influence. It would not be wise to exaggerate the prospects of a relationship or joint venture, nor to overestimate the help and input you may receive from others.
Aquarius, the Water-Bearer
The retrograde phase during the forecast period begins this year in Cancer on November 7 and lasts until March 6th, 2014. Jupiter remains in Cancer until July 16th, 2014, then you can look forward to a year of sex, death, taxes, and a focus on life's mysteries. I will look more closely at your prospects in another article here later in the year.Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
On June 26, Jupiter, the lord of the cosmic gods, strides into Cancer, your solar sixth house. That's a good thing! Your work and working relationships are likely to expand, as it stimulates a much more favourable outlook for relationships with employees, subordinates and associated professionals. It's a good time to streamline your working routines. Relations with underlings can also be improved, though you'll be happiest when working unsupervised. Your work and responsibilities will expand in scope and you may need to take on extra help. Don't get the idea that you are invincible, dear Aquarius, as pride often comes before a fall. Your job may require more travel, or advanced training—but it would be unwise to take any aspect of it for granted. You may buy a pet or other small animal during this transit, or take more of an interest in small animals. Military matters might occupy your mind, and your interest in health and physical fitness may increase. Your physical wellbeing has a favourable outlook, but don't take your health too much for granted. Avoid procrastination and overeating.
Pisces, the Fishes
A retrograde phase occurs this year between November 7th and March 6th of 2014. Jupiter remains exalted in the Crab until July 16th, 2014, then Leo, your solar seventh house, receives this benefic energy over the ensuing year. Partnerships, marriage and even legal issues will go well for you and eligible Lions will be drawn to tie the knot. Let's hope it does not signify the irresistible force meeting the immoveable object! I will give you some more detailed info, so follow your star here later in the year, for an update to the forecast. Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
Fortunate Jupiter, your life-ruler, is a healing, optimistic and expansive influence, and the mighty lord of the planetary powers rolls into delightful Cancer, your fifth house of romance, children and speculation on June 26 for a yearlong stay. Ego-boosting romantic attractions are in the wind; relationships with children will blossom, and you'll need to control the urge to blow it all on the ponies.
This should be a creative and enjoyable dish, when romance, pleasure, and creative, egoboosting fun is the underlying flavour. It improves your lovelife, presents investment opportunities and creates happier relations with children. A good thing all round, really! Speculative opportunities will present themselves, so money can be made. The Fish loves to throw the money around, but remember, Jupiter tends to excess. You will be inclined to take some judicious risks with gambling and speculative interests, but if you base these risks on a well-thought-through foundation, making use of a mixture of your intuition and expertise, you should do very well.
Jupiter turns retrograde during the forecast period between November 7th this year and March 6th next. Your life-ruler remains in Cancer until July 16th, 2014, then steps into Leo, the sign of the Lion. Your health should improve and work will be more fulfilling over the ensuing year. Check out the indications for 2014/5 here later in the year, when I will record them in another forecast. For now, Check out your Year Ahead in 2013!
