Pisces & Aries Moons:
Pisces and Aries Solar Festivals 2011 [part 2]
Restiveness & Restitution

Malvin Artley, our regular esoteric commentator, presents the Pisces and Aries Solar Festivals, 2011, at the Full Moon in Virgo and the Full Moon in Libra. Malvin did not write a Pisces letter this year due to other commitments, so he has decided to include it in this one, the Aries letter, as Aries starts the high point of the spiritual year—the so-called three great spiritual festivals which coincide with the festivals of Aries, Taurus and Gemini. The Full Moon of Pisces (the Full Moon at Virgo 28º 48') takes place on the 19th of March 2011 at around 18:11 UT (GMT). It's a Super Moon! Then the Full Moon of Aries (Full Moon at Libra 27░ 44') is due on April 18 at around 02:45 UT.

Neptune Enters Pisces

The other astrological event that is taking place now is the ingress of Neptune into its home sign of Pisces. The last time it was there was in 1847-62. What did we see when Neptune last transited through Pisces? We saw the 'Springtime of the Peoples', which led to the widespread reorganization of most of Europe, starting with France, large movements involving women's rights and abolitionist movements, gold rushes in Australia and the US, the development of the Bessemer converter which revolutionized the steel industry, the first oil well, the first transatlantic telegraph cable, the Pony Express, the American Civil War, the Opium Wars in China and the first ironclad warships. So, in all we saw mass movements for the rights of the people in general and the underclasses, moves toward more compassionate treatment of people, advances in metals and their purification—but specifically in relation to the wealth they would generate, and developments on the oceans, in communications and regarding liquids.

I have covered Neptune fairly extensively in previous letters, and its servant Pluto, along with their interaction, and I will be putting a compilation about the two on the site in a week or so. Suffice it to say that Neptune reveals truth, and Pluto clears the way toward the revelation of that truth. Pluto governs the path of purification along with Mars (its 'higher octave') and removes obstructions to the realization of truth, whatever that truth may be. There is an unfortunate tendency with many astrologers to see Neptune as bringing deception and dissolution, when in point of fact what it really does is to reveal to us how we have deceived ourselves and others if the experiences it brings are read rightly. Neptune shows us much more than that, however. In the end it shows us how there is nothing that resists the inexorable forces of change, that all things are impermanent, and that to focus on finding one's truth in events, phenomena and things is mistaken thinking. Whereas Uranus shows us the path of the will, Neptune show us the path of wisdom, what in Buddhist terminology would be called 'the wisdom realizing emptiness'. So, with the two planets in signs that they rule in one way or another we have a very powerful influx of spiritual force into our planetary life, as is evidenced by the playing out of events in the world at the moment.

The Springtime of the Peoples

It will be of interest to note that the last time Uranus was in Aries and Neptune was in Pisces at the same time was the period of 1848-52. In that time there were astounding changes taking place in the world. The two most notable of these events were the 'Springtime of the Peoples' in Europe and the feminist and abolitionist movements, primarily in the US. History repeats itself. The 'Springtime of the Peoples' is a fascinating look at how this happens, because we are seeing a similar occurrence to what happened then in Europe in the Middle East now. There were many similarities in the events that led to the rebellion against the European monarchies—an economic downturn a couple of years before, widespread food shortages, technological change revolutionizing the lives of the working classes, the media of the day expanding the political awareness of the masses, liberal reformers and radical politicians were reshaping governments, and the nobility and middle classes were rising up against or at least deeply dissatisfied with royal absolutism. It was the beginning of the end of the monarchy and feudal society in Europe, and of significant influence by the Church. Most of the rebellions were summarily crushed, but the wheels were set in motion, and by the end of the 19th Century Europe had been remade into the basis of the modern society we see today.

The Springtime of the Peoples in Europe eventually brought universal male suffrage in Europe (it was a feudal society up to that point) initially and then female suffrage in Europe and the US and the freeing of slaves throughout the world. In short, the people rose up and demanded more equanimity from the ruling classes, a more compassionate treatment of people in general and their rightful share and place in society. Right human relations eventually won the day. The will-to-good, as evidenced by Uranus in Aries, sparked the urge to freedom in the hearts of the masses, while Neptune brought down the fašade of the 'divine right of kings' and revealed the truth to the masses of the deception and injustice being foisted upon them by the rulers and nobility of the day. Conditions are no different today, and not just in the Middle East. Some very similar conditions that were extant in Europe in those days are still present there today, and indeed throughout the world, and especially in the US—economic downturn, economic slavery throughout the world (sweat-shops and the like), inequitable distribution of wealth, technological advances and greater media savvy with the people, and political polarization. We are restive in many parts of the world. The forces of restoration are sweeping through. What it will bring in the interim is anyone's guess, but the world will be a very different place in the decades to come if the lessons of history are any indication.

Full Moon Symbols

I will forgo the usual look at the figures for the full moons this time, but will return to it in the next letters. Instead, we will simply look at the symbols for the degrees of the luminaries and give the times for the lunations. The Pisces full moon took place at 6:10 PM UT on the 19th of March. The Sun was conjunct Uranus in that figure, thus heralding the influx Aries point dynamics we are seeing. The Sabian symbol for the Sun reads:

Light breaking into many colors as it passes through a prism. – 29 Pisces
…and for the Moon:
A seeker after occult knowledge is reading an ancient scroll which illumines his/her mind. – 29 Virgo

These are two very powerful symbols with regard to light on the path of salvation, which Pisces rules. Pisces transmits the Light of the World, the Light which ends the darkness of matter forever, and with these two symbols we see the theme of Light shown/shone clearly. The 'prism' of the first symbol could be seen to be the focused eye of the soul itself, the 'many colors' being the Light it shines 'in dark places' through the personas it takes on life after life. The 'seeker after occult knowledge' in light of the first symbol would be the initiate gleaning what can be had of the Ancient Wisdom on the path of seeing, for no true occult knowledge is had without an opened eye and no true salvation for others can be transmitted without the mind of enlightenment functioning in an effective measure. Pisces marks the path of the world savior, who has ended the darkness of samsara and attained liberation from this world, only to come back in the spirit of love and compassion to bring others to that same state. No one gains true occult knowledge until the third eye (the mind's eye) is opened and flooded with the 'Light of the World', thus illumining the mind. What we should see from the Pisces interval throughout this year, then, is a powerful influx of Light into this world, thus illuminating the path ahead and shining into dark corners—in other words, highlighting those areas of our psyches that need work.

The Aries full moon will take place on the 18th of April 2011 at 12:44 PM AEST (2:44 AM UT). The main characteristic of the figure is the easy opposition between the Sun and Moon with Neptune as the calming point, sextile to the Sun. The Sabian symbols for the Sun and the Moon read as follows:

A large audience confronts a performer who disappoints their expectations. Sun, 28 Aries
A man becoming aware of spiritual forces surrounding and assisting him. Moon, 28 Libra

Aries transmits the Light of Life itself, seeking that which can be used for divine expression. In these two symbols we see the crux of the situation confronting us in the world at the moment. The 'performer' in the first symbol can be seen to represent the political leaders the world over who have not come up to expectations. Such disappointment of expectations by our elected officials is pretty well universal. In one sense, the hands of those leaders are tied by the events which preceded their election in democratic countries. In autocratic countries, the populaces of those countries feel oppressed by the very nature of their governments. Given the economic, climactic, and changeable nature of the world, pressure is being put on governments to provide a better means of life for the population and for positive guidance out of the present situation. Though there are many good leaders in the world at the moment, it is difficult to push through change, especially where political affiliations are so divided and the legislative branches of government are hung in so many cases. So, yes, there is widespread disappointment in political leadership the world over. When one adds into the mix the dynamics of the second symbol, we see that the general populace, represented by the Moon in mundane figures, is becoming more aware of and bolstered by the spiritual forces they feel pouring into the world. Thus, we see the almost inevitable tide of discontent and rebellion taking place in many corners.

Compassion is the Cure

At a more personal level, what the above dynamics bring in is the feeling that our lives have not measured up to our expectations, and this unfortunately can get projected onto those closest to us. While it is true that often people do not measure up and have displayed behavior that is probably not the best in some cases, as usually happens people are more apt to blame someone else for problems they have actually contributed greatly to themselves. This full moon will bring revelation to many of these difficulties in one's personal life and hopefully better relations will result from any misunderstandings or crises that may eventuate.

In the figure, we find Mercury and Mars opposing Saturn, Mercury and Saturn both being retrograde, and hence we see the enormous frustration that can come about as a result of miscommunications, lack of a clear sense of boundaries, the feeling that we should be getting on with things but we feel tied down by the past, and a feeling that somehow a wet blanket is being thrown over the efforts we have made. Add to this the fact that Pluto forms the apex of the T-square with that opposition and we see that a major clearing of the air must take place. Pluto is also retrograde, and we cannot ignore the fact that in order to get the best results from this Aries interval, we must look within and not look to cast blame on others. Loving compassion is the only real cure for the T-square just mentioned. It is definitely not an easy configuration and carries with it the seeds a lot of subconscious projection. We will see this in political areas as well as in personal ones, too.

We should be very careful as individuals to note how much our conditioning both from a cultural and familial aspect colors our expectations of others. We do not realize that much of what we do is simply a knee-jerk response to our conditioning rather than any real sense of conscious volition on our part. We do things according to our tastes, to what we think is appropriate in a cultural sense, according to what we think people might feel about us, and we often do this very unconsciously. I think that this Aries interval will highlight very strongly for us, if we are open to it, how much we are trapped by our past conditioning. In a broad and general sense—and this is strictly a generalization—what I am calling 'conditioning' here is what most people call their psychology, but psychology is much more than that.

The point to be made here is that there are certain conditioning factors within our psyche that tend to hold us back more than they tend to help us, and much of this does come from cultural and familial conditioning. Such conditioning can lead to a whole host of ills such as racism, class attitudes, segregation, us-versus-them mentality, and so on. In that respect, little as we may want to like it, we are little better than animals when we behave in those ways.

Action, Not Reaction

Finally, when people look out upon the difficulties in the world, the economic situation, worries over food supply, worries over instability in the world, and the whole host of things that bombard us on a daily basis from the various media, people are generally and rightly worried about where it will all lead and what the future holds for their children. Though it may be unrecognized in the mainstream, this worry over one's children and their future is a very powerful motivating factor for the uprisings and unrest we see. In democratic societies people will vote with their feet at election time if they feel that their financial and social security is threatened. In autocratic societies, people have no other recourse than rebellion to better their lot unless their leaders have very drastic change of heart, which is unlikely as we are seeing.

As this letter is a bit longer than usual, it was necessarily so to unravel certain of these astrological factors in light of the history being made before us. Also, this is basically two letters in one. We needed to look a bit below the surface of the astrology underlying especially the events in the Middle East and the political imperatives unfolding in Western countries. The Chinese seem to be very aware of what is going on and in typical fashion they are clamping down on minority groups, seeking to avoid any unrest. China is a bit of a different case to the monarchies in the Middle East and autocracies in Africa, however. The lot of the average Chinese person has improved dramatically in past decades. I doubt we will see the widespread revolution in China we are seeing in other parts of the world. We will, however, continue to see revolutions in the Middle East and perhaps political revolutions in Western societies, hopefully bloodless. In our personal lives, partly because of the world situation and partly because we feel the impress of the spiritual energies coming in, our personal lives will not be immune from upheaval either. If we can see these times as opportunities to better ourselves and the lives of those around us we will have received a great gift. If we can act on these impulses yet not be reactive when change comes, then our lives stand to be greatly improved. I hope that will be the case for all of us.

Blessings to all of you these times. May peace come our minds. May restitution come to our hearts.

Malvin.
