Last year was a Fire Rooster and what a difficult roller coaster year. Now in the cycle of twelve comes the faithful Dog. This is an Earth Dog year and the Dog is ruled by Earth element, so it's double Earth. The Dog years are 1922, '34, '46, '58, '70, '82, '94, 2006. The Dog character has the principle qualities of loyalty, faithfulness and unselfishness. He is active and honest and is appreciated by his superiors. He looks to how wrongs can be corrected. Money is important for the family and so he will earn to support them, however, he thinks of it as mere 'paper'. He delights in anything to do with the mysterious, the bizarre and the unusual, so he yearns to investigate these things in life.
The Dog is considered loyal, faithful and very active and honest. He can also be very anxious and even pessimistic at times. He is appreciated by those in charge, is a good manager and often gives priority to the collective interests of his staff rather than his own. He is very good at predicting disasters at times. He adores the occult and the mysterious. The best Dog time to be born is in the daytime. Being born at night often means the Dog is always on the alert.
The mythology surrounding dogs is very deep and interesting. The Dog is often seen to be the guardian between the two worlds of the living and the dead. The world of death, kingdoms of darkness and ice, and the crossroads to the beyond, are his territory. As the Egyptian god Anubis, he guides souls during their funeral voyage. In the Mexican tradition, the constellation of the Dog is the one that introduces the ideas of death, the end of life and the subterranean world. He is a symbol of the initiation into death and rebirth.
Cerberus of Greek mythology is often called the Hound of Hades, and is the multi-headed dog guarding the Gates of the Underworld to prevent the dead from leaving. Cerberus was the offspring of the monsters Echidna and Typhon, and is usually described as having three heads, a serpent for a tail, and snakes protruding from parts of his body. In the star constellation Cerberus, introduced by Johannes Hevelius in 1687, Cerberus is drawn as a three-headed snake, held in Hercules' hand. Cerberus' mythology concerns his capture by Hercules. In Homer's tales we learn that Hercules was sent by Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns, to bring back Cerberus from Hades, the king of the underworld. This was the twelfth and final labour imposed on Hercules. The Dog is also seen in many cultures as the guardian of gates and bridges, and becomes the eternal guide and the faithful companion.
You are all aware of the star Sirius, the brightest star in the southern and northern skies. It's often referred to as the Dog star. It's a binary star system, which was only relatively recently understood as two stars by the German astronomer Friedrich Bessel in 1844. In January 1862, American astronomer Alvan Graham Clark first observed the faint companion, which is now called Sirius B. Notwithstanding, the Dogon tribes of Mali in West Africa knew thousands of years ago that Sirius was a binary system. Note the name Dogon contains the word DOG. The Dogon have the word 'Ogo' as their name for the Source of all Light (in other words, the creator). Sirius is known colloquially as the Dog Star, due to it's prominence in the constellation, Canis Major (the Greater Dog). The heliacal rising of Sirius marked the flooding of the Nile in Ancient Egypt and the "dog days" of summer for the ancient Greeks, while to the Polynesians in the southern hemisphere the star marked winter and was an important reference for their navigation around the Pacific Ocean (See the The Science of the Dogon by Laird Scranton).
One more reflection: the Dog, the Wolf, the Coyote and the Dingo are all related by a genetic link; however, each of them is different. They have roles that are similar, but the pack behaviour of wolves and coyotes is different from the domestic dog. Domestic dogs evolved from wolves that came into contact with European hunter-gatherers between 18,800 - 32,100 years ago, according to a new study that compares DNA from dozens of dogs and wolves. It was food that attracted them -- they hung around campfires, shelters and caves and gradually became adapted to human contact. In Native American philosophy and beliefs the Wolf is regarded as the visionary -- the spiritual messenger who can see into the invisible realms. In Russia and Chechnya the Wolf is a national symbol signifying nobility, strength, the family unit and a wild spirit.
The Dog is intelligent, clear-sighted and very keen of mind. Dog people love to be intrigued by a mystery and will spend time on projects concerning the unsolved mysteries of the world. The bizarre, the paranormal and the parapsychological attract them. In leisure they love films, especially those dealing with the fantastic, SciFi topics and fantasy. Favourite places include out-of-the-way geographical sites, remote regions and romantic hills such as in Scotland or the Celtic regions. They feel at home in the wilds of Tibet or Mongolia, the high mountains of the Swiss Alps and the jungles of the Amazon. For this reason they are explorers, but also prefer the comforts of peaceful evenings by the fire where it's far from the business of the everyday world. Red poppies and water lilies are their favourite plants, and their colours are often blue and black. They are most likely to be found in the professions of teacher, nurse, missionary, magistrate, judge, lawyer, priest, nun, doctor, scientist, researcher or film/ art/ literature critic.
There is an issue with anxiety, which will often not leave a Dog person. The Dog can oscillate between action, anxiety and busy pacing, while resolving weighty problems. Then, on the other side, he will be quiet and contemplating his fate. While Dogs can espouse a carefree attitude to life and job, in fact there is this perpetual thought going on -- What is the point of all this? There is a deeper philosophical dimension to all dogs, which is his spiritual connection. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead it was the dog who guided souls on their journeys into the next world. This year then is going to bring a certain edge to us all and we'll be questioning why we are all here.
Dog people are known to prefer longer secure affairs of the heart rather than passing adventures. Dogs are generally affectionate, tender, and even passionate. When in a relationship they respect their commitments and they know how to resist temptation. Protecting their home is important to a Dog person, so they look after their places and partners. They can be highly emotional and intuitive and feel things about others. They can be sensitive to other's personal feelings. Dogs do not like to be betrayed, so they must marry someone who is also straight and honest. Marrying an optimist will certainly help a Dog person to feel comfortable. Dogs are also faithful friends, so they will always offer to help when things go wrong. They do turn into fussy parents once there are children and life with a Dog is not always the same as before kids.
The Chinese Zodiac cycles over 12 animals and five elements making the same combination every 60 years. The previous Yang Earth Dog was in 1958. The Dog is a complicated Earth element which is in Chinese is a symbol of the "Grave of Fire", "the Underground" or the "Gate to Hell" and so it is related to death, religious, spiritual and occult matters. Dog years often are associated with excavation and archaeological discoveries. Note that the tomb of King Tut was discovered in 1922 which was a Dog year. As Dog refers to the underground, it will also bring more issues and troubles related to subways, mines and tunnels.
The Dog is what's called a "Flower Hat" in the Four Pillars of Destiny. This means artistic academic quality, combined with lonely feelings. As such 1958 was remarkable with cultural and scientific developments. In 1898 (a Dog year) Marie Curie announced the discovery of Radium and radioactivity. In 1958 the USA sent their first satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit in January, followed by Vanguard 1 and Explorer 3 in March. They continued with Explorer 4 in July. NASA was formally created by the US Congress in July 1958 and launched the first spacecraft, Pioneer 1, in October. The USA also launched the first communication satellite called SCORE in December 1958. The Soviet Union sent Sputnik 3 into orbit in May 1958.
The first video game Tennis for Two was introduced in October 1958. The MGM musical movie Gigi was a huge success, receiving nine Academy Awards in 1958. Sleeping Beauty, the very popular Disney cartoon was launched in Jan 1959 -- still a Dog year. The year 1958 saw the Vietnam war escalating via the Viet Cong against the Ngo Dinh Diem government. The Earth Dog year in 1958 was also the UN's International Geophysical Year and the Earth's magnetosphere was discovered in that year. The Van Allen radiation belts were also discovered around the Earth. The European Common Market came into play in 1958. Fidel Castro launched full scale war against the Cuban government. Charles De Gaulle was elected President of France for the first time. Alaska became the 49th state of the USA. The Guggenheim Museum in New York designed by Frank Lloyd Wright opened. The US nuclear submarine Nautilus passed under the North Pole for the first time.
Films, Art and Media -- films were Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor, Touch of Evil by Orson Wells, Mon Oncle by Jaques Tati. The Cha Cha Cha becomes the new dance craze. Popular songs were The Chipmunk Song, Chanson d'Amour, The Purple People Eater, Catch a Falling Star, and A Certain Smile. The first stereophonic recordings came into popular use. The Beatnik movement, originating in California, spread though out the USA. Truman Capote wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's, Boris Pasternak wrote Doctor Zhivago. The complete works of Tolstoy were published in the USSR for the first time in 90 volumes.
Yang Earth is the symbol of a mountain. Yang Earth sitting on the Dog is a massively big mountain. So such a year indicates greater chances of disasters related to mountains and the earth. There is danger of landslides, avalanches and its not as safe for mountaineering sports. The previous Earth Dog year 1958 was marked by serious air crashes -- in March, a US bomber accidentally dropped a (non-triggered) atom bomb in South Carolina which destroyed a house and injured a few people. In April, a United Airline plane had a mid-air collision with a US Air Force jet fighter near Las Vegas, killing 49 people. In August, a KLM airline crashed into the sea with 99 passengers. The Dog being the 'Grave of Fire', it's also considered as the storage of fire and so there will be fire disasters and explosions when fire is released from storage. There were many fire disasters in 1958. In March 1958 a big fire broke out in an underwear company in New York, killing 24 people. In December a horrible fire in a Chicago school killed 90 students and 3 nuns. Also in the same month, a serious fire in a department store in Bogota, Columbia killed 84 people. One of the strongest known solar maximums was recorded in November 1958.
The Earth Dog Year is a powerful period in our lives, offering a new interpretation of our human condition. Strength of character, education, morality, social life, health and caring for our elders are all fundamental questions which should be revised and improved during this year. Illumination of mankind will be an important outcome from this year and we will all benefit. Discovery of new truths about ourselves are very possible, especially related to our past on the earth. Since Earth rules being solid and dependable and the earth is our home, many new truths will surface about the origins of mankind this year. Earth element also rules late summer and the harvest of food. It rules mudbricks and earth houses. In art its landscapes and mother and child images. Its also pottery, ceramics and mosaics. In fashion and clothing its practical and durable fabrics and those made from natural fibres. In the body it rules the spleen, the stomach and the lips, mouth and muscles. Its taste is sweet and fragrant and it rules singing. The Earth person is the peacemaker type. So look for these things to play out during 2018.
What are the likely health issues for this year? In Chinese medicine, Earth represents the cells and muscles. Cancer is caused by a disorder of the cells, and is related to an excessive amount of unfavourable Earth element overcome by water or dampness. 2018 is a very heavy Earth year. Thus, this year major health problems will involve cancer and its necessary to take good quantities of anti-oxidants if Earth is the unfavourable element in your Chinese Four Pillars chart. Your heart and blood circulation is related to the Fire element, and as the Dog means Fire enters into the Grave, it's unfavourable for people who have a weak Fire element. This will bring issues with weak energies, a weaker heart, or poor blood circulation and indigestion. The imbalance of Earth element may also bring stomach problems and a focus on diabetes. The suitable health supplement will be COEnzyme Q10 for enhancing the Fire element. As Earth is also our stomach and muscle tissue, we can gain weight more easily in this heavy Earth year. It's necessary to re-examine yourself and look to a more healthy diet. It's interesting that both the Instant Noodle and Pizza Hut began in 1958, the previous Earth Dog year. Pizza Hut opened in June 1958 in an Earth Fire month of the Dog year. Then PepsiCo acquired Pizza Hut in November 1977, a Fire Snake year.
In Chinese medicine, Earth element is pancreas and stomach. So if Earth element is out of balance, it can bring stomach and pancreas troubles. Diabetes is also a sickness related to pancreas, so this will be more prominent in 2018.
There are Five Elements affecting people's moods. In general, Fire is joy or sadness, Water is willpower or fear, Earth is guilt or mediation and calm, Metal is grief or stuckness, and Wood is kindness or anger. The Fire element basically symbolises happiness in the five emotional moods of people, and it generates optimism and confidence. As such, Fire years often boost people's confidence about the economy bringing good performances in the stock market. This has been the factor behind stock market growth since 2013 to 2017 with a Fire element presence in those years. However, the Fire cycle of elements ended in 2017 with the Yin Rooster, and as the 2018 Dog year represents the 'Grave of Fire', it means the Fire optimism is going down and the fear aspect of the Water element will begin to rise. The coming years of 2019 (Earth Pig), 2020 (Metal Rat), 2021 (Metal Ox) are all years featuring Water and Metal -- the Pig and the Rat are ruled by Water.
The heavy Earth element of 2018 is expected to bring prosperity to Wood industries and Fire industries -- this is because Wood conquers Earth. The Earth element is a symbol of money to the Wood industry which is fashion, media, paper, books, education and environmental goods. The second best industries can be Fire, which are energy, entertainment and finance. The Earth industries, which are property, mining and high tech, face strong competition in an Earth year. Also the money from Earth industries is Water, which is totally absent. Metal industries such as banking, machinery, cars are in an unfavourable year, as Wood is totally absent. The last one is the Water industry which is shipping, communications and transport. The Water industry will not be profitable in 2018.
In summary, the industries that will perform well in the Year of the Dog will be all related to the Wood element -- environmental goods, fashion, media, books, education, plants, nurseries and flowers. Fire industries are productive but not profitable. The other three industries are not so prosperous in 2018.
So what can we expect from the upcoming year? The Dog is an ethical and idealistic sign, and the year that bears its name will also bring increased social awareness and interest in society's less powerful members. We will see this trend develop in business. Any tendencies to take and take will be replaced by a much wider spread sentiment of generosity and selflessness.
